A Q&A With Krissy Matthews

No limits prog-rock blues from, from Oxford…

What’s the title of your latest release, and what does it mean to you?
Krissy Matthews and Friends. It features 80 musicians and they are all world class and at the top of their game. This was a huge project I took on that took me a year to produce but I am so proud of the end result and what I have achieved. Lots of different genres and over 3 hours of music. Very happy with the final product.

What was the hardest part about putting this release together, and why?
Having so many different musicians was very taxing on me mentally as I had to keep writing people and reminding them to do their parts etc and making sure everyone is lined up at the right part of the songs and making sure I send them the right time stamps to play and stuff. It really was so difficult but hard work pays off.

Who produced the release – what did they bring to it?
I produced this record on my own. I like to have full control and do what I want to do and enjoy that.

What do you want the listener to take away from listening to your music?
I want them to feel good, relaxed and like they have just come from visiting a different planet.

How does a track normally come together? Can you tell us something about the process?
It varies from each track. But usually I come up with a lyrical idea based on something that has happened to me or something I have seen or feel strongly about, and then me and the band jam around at soundchecks and if we like what we play, we turn it into a song!

What band/artists have influenced you the most since you started this project, and why?
My favourite bands would be The Shadows, Jack White, Band of Skulls, Ida Maria, Tedeschi Trucks Band, Roy Buchanan and Jeff Healey.

A Q&A With Krissy Matthews

What countries would you like to tour? Are there any standout venues you’d like to play in?
I would like to tour USA and Japan. Stand-out venues would be Royal Albert Hall or Madison Square Garden.

If you could pick one track for our readers to listen to in order to get a taste of your music, what would you pick, and why?
I would choose ‘Queen’ as this features the amazing Kim Jennett and is an angry song played with lots of emotion. Turn it up loud!

What ambitions do you have for the band/your career?
I just want to get as far as I can do, continue to live off music and hope we draw bigger crowds one day. Main thing is to stay happy and healthy.

Finally, as you leave the stage, what are your parting words?
Check my music out, buy a copy, download a copy or whatever you do, and please buy a ticket for one of my shows on my UK tour and come and help keep music live.
