Mess of genres reveals something beautiful, from Leeds…

YOUR NAME: Lotte.
BAND NAME: Luna Pines.
WHAT DO YOU DO/PLAY? I play synths, sample pads and sing, as well as produce and mix all of our music.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN TOGETHER AS A BAND/PLAYING MUSIC?
We’ve been doing Luna Pines for about a year now.

GIVE US THREE REASONS WHY WE SHOULD TRACK DOWN, LISTEN AND DISCOVER YOUR MUSIC?
Our music is an original blend of electronica, ambient and dream pop music, which most people have said doesn’t even fit a genre – so if that intrigues you check it out! We produce everything ourselves in our bedroom, so I think the DIY aspect really proves how passionate we are about our music. We’re extremely diverse, with our live set sounding very different to our singles, so you should check us out live too!

WHERE DO YOU SOUND BEST – FESTIVAL, CLUB, BEDROOM – OR SOMEWHERE ELSE?
Our best gigs have been in smaller venues, so I think we sound best there. Small, DIY venues like Hyde Park Book Club in Leeds we have really enjoyed. I think an intimate setting is perfect for our music. We just played a sold out show at The Hope & Anchor Islington which was super fun, and we’re playing O2 Academy Islington in March too!

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST…
RECORD? The National’s Trouble Will Find Me was the first vinyl I bought when it came out.
CD? Placebo’s Meds when I was about ten. My mum wouldn’t let me get it because of the cover art being quite disturbing for a ten-year-old, so I snuck out and got it from Woolworths down the road.
DOWNLOAD? I remember this one – when I first got hold of my mum’s iTunes account when I was young and went on a spree. ‘World Spins Madly On’ by The Weepies was the first thing I downloaded – that’s still a favourite song of mine.

luna pines interview main Q&ASO, WHEN IT ALL GOES RIGHT AND YOU’VE GOT A MANSION AND A SUPERMODEL GIRL/BOYFRIEND, WHAT WILL BE YOUR BIGGEST MUSICAL INDULGENCE?
Biggest musical indulgence would probably be our own studio and a really expanded live set with awesome lighting and visuals.

SO, WHEN IT ALL GOES WRONG AND YOU’VE ACRIMONIOUSLY BROKEN UP CITING HUGE MUSICAL DIFFERENCES, WHAT DO YOU FALL BACK ON?
No idea.

WHO ARE YORKSHIRE’S FINEST IN CULTURE, SPORT AND MUSIC?
In music there are so many cool bands in our scene in Leeds; Denton Thrift, Peakes and Heir to name a few.

NAME YOUR SUPERGROUP – WHO’S PLAYING WHAT AND WHO’S ON VOCALS?
Matt Berninger from The National on vocals, Julien Baker on vocals/guitar, George Daniel from The 1975 on drums, Munaf Rayani from Explosions In The Sky on guitar, Kelly Hellmrich from Camp Cope on bass, Scott Hansen (Tycho) on keys/synths.

GO SEE THIS FILM: Girl, Interrupted.
GO READ THIS BOOK: As I Lay Dying by William Faulkner.
WOULDN’T BE CAUGHT DEAD SUPPORTING: That rapper Stitches… just YouTube Brick In Yo Face By Him and you’ll see what I mean…
LONDON, L.A OR LEEDS?: Hopefully one day, L.A.

AND FINALLY… AS YOU LEAVE THE STAGE, WHAT ARE YOUR PARTING WORDS.
Thanks very much to anyone who listens and connects with our music, you’re the best!
