Introducing-Static-Caravan

Patchwork of genres, from Leeds…

YOUR NAME: Tom Carroll, Jack O’Connor,Tom Owen, Matt Purbrick, Mia Windsor.
BAND NAME: Static Caravan.
WHAT DO YOU PLAY? Instruments.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN TOGETHER AS A BAND? About 4 years, but we took a break during COVID.

GIVE US 2 REASONS WHY WE SHOULD TRACK DOWN, LISTEN AND DISCOVER YOUR MUSIC?
1. Our upcoming EP ‘The Marble Faun’ mixes indie rock with drum n’ bass with acoustic drone with dream pop with harsh noise. We spent over a year cutting down and squaring up 350+ Ableton tracks into four A-sides like a sheet of paper. We’re all very pleased with it.
2. There are five of us and we all have fairly different tastes so when we do agree on stuff, chances are you might too?

WHERE DO YOU SOUND BEST – FESTIVAL, CLUB, BEDROOM – OR SOMEWHERE ELSE?
A combination festival-club-bedroom.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST (purchased)…
RECORD? Surfer Rosa (Pixies) for my birthday, but I bought Dial M for Monkey by Bonobo in a record store first.
CD? Can’t remember, probably something bad.
DOWNLOAD? Karaoke Version of ‘Ain’t no Rest for the Wicked’.

SO, WHEN IT ALL GOES RIGHT AND YOU’VE GOT A HUGE QUEUE OF HANGERS-ON AND A RIDICULOUS MANSION, WHAT WILL BE YOUR BIGGEST INDULGENCE, MUSICAL OR OTHERWISE?
A solid gold clarinet.

SO, WHEN IT ALL GOES WRONG AND YOU’VE ACRIMONIOUSLY BROKEN UP CITING HUGE MUSICAL DIFFERENCES, WHAT DO YOU FALL BACK ON?
Our parallel careers as neo-dada performance artists in the Yorkshire experimental scene.

PLEASE CITE SOME INTER-BAND MUSICAL DIFFERENCES…
We get on very well as friends and bandmates, but there’s really not much music we all agree on. I think the only bands all five of us like are Pavement and The Beatles. Also, some of us are certainly more pro-autotune than others.

WHO ARE YORKSHIRE’S FINEST IN CULTURE, SPORT AND MUSIC?
Culture: Scalarama and other DIY film screenings.
Sport: Farsley Celtic.
Music: Nape Neck, Fuzz Lightyear, Beige Palace, Clothes Horse, Holodrum, Drahla, 10 Bag Boyz.

NAME YOUR SUPERGROUP – WHO’S PLAYING WHAT, WHO’S ON VOCALS AND WHO’S YOUR BEZ?
I would personally love to see a supergroup of big hyperpop producers each playing the instrument they first learnt to play music on. Whitearmor on drums, AG Cook on piano, Laura Les on guitar, perhaps George Clanton on bass. Maybe they’d play trippy post-rock, maybe they’d be a thrashy grunge band, maybe they’d get really into boogie-woogie blues music, that’s for them to find out. Their dancer/mascot would be 97-year-old Dick Van Dyke.

GO SEE THIS FILM: Baghead.
GO READ THIS BOOK: The Fortunate Pilgrim.
GREAT LOST BAND/ARTIST: Sluik, Vyto B.
WOULDN’T BE CAUGHT DEAD SUPPORTING: DieKaiDie.
LONDON, L.A OR LEEDS?: Leeds, but I have a fantasy of one day getting flown to LA as a wildcard to do some production work on the debut hyperpop album of a medium-sized TikTok star. In my fantasy, the sessions are a disaster, everyone thinks I’m really weird for cycling instead of driving and for not having AC in my apartment, but I get to hang out in beautiful California for a bit.

AND FINALLY… AS YOU LEAVE THE STAGE, WHAT ARE YOUR PARTING WORDS?
There are still some bourbon biscuits at the front. Help yourselves.

The Marble Faun EP by Static Caravan is available from October 20th. Pre-save it by clicking here.
