Leeds noise grungers from the Hyde Park basements…

YOUR NAME: Ben Parry.
BAND NAME: Fuzz Lightyear.
WHAT DO YOU DO/PLAY? Guitar/Shouting/General Annoyance.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN TOGETHER AS A BAND/PLAYING MUSIC?
We’ve been together since the summer of 2019, all of us have been playing music since we were wee lads.

GIVE US 3 REASONS WHY WE SHOULD TRACK DOWN, LISTEN AND DISCOVER YOUR MUSIC?
-There’s an angsty teenager inside of you that loves loud angry men and loud angry guitars.
-We’re all absolutely adorable.
-Nu metal is the next big thing and you should just embrace it.

WHERE DO YOU SOUND BEST – FESTIVAL, CLUB, BEDROOM – OR SOMEWHERE ELSE?
We’ve had some really fun basement gigs, but that’s the corny answer really. We sound best at Mabgate Bleach.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST….
RECORD? The answers for all of these are relatively cringey. Either the ‘Lost On Me’ 7” by Peace or ‘sometimes i sit and think and sometimes i just sit’ by Courtney Barnett. Not sure which one was first.
CD? Wasting Light by Foo Fighters.
DOWNLOAD? I don’t think I’ve ever paid for a download, but the first thing I ever pirated was Arctic Monkeys’ debut.

SO, WHEN IT ALL GOES RIGHT AND YOU’VE GOT A HUGE QUEUE OF HANGERS-ON AND A RIDICULOUS MANSION, WHAT WILL BE YOUR BIGGEST INDULGENCE, MUSICAL OR OTHERWISE?
Family Guy box sets.

SO, WHEN IT ALL GOES WRONG AND YOU’VE ACRIMONIOUSLY BROKEN UP CITING HUGE MUSICAL DIFFERENCES, WHAT DO YOU FALL BACK ON?
I think I’d just have a quiet life and get really into whittling or something. Or I’d just start another punny band I guess.

CITE SOME INTER-BAND MUSICAL DIFFERENCES…
We’re all pretty disparate in our tastes which makes all our writing come out weird, it’s fun. Josh and Varun pull from a lot of hardcore influences whereas me and Alex take a fair bit of influence from psych rock stuff. I think we all agree that In Utero is the best Nirvana record though.

WHO ARE YORKSHIRE’S FINEST IN CULTURE, SPORT AND MUSIC?
My favourite band from Yorkshire is Perspex. Unmatched lyricism set against poppy freakbeat tunes – absolute gold. I think they’d qualify for all 3. I’ve heard Gladboy aren’t bad on the pitch though.

fuzz lightyear interviewNAME YOUR SUPERGROUP – WHO’S PLAYING WHAT, WHO’S ON VOCALS AND WHO’S YOUR BEZ?
Drums: Animal from The Muppets
Guitar: Elizabeth Cotten
Bass: Tina Weymouth and Kim Gordon
Synths/Noises: Roxy Music era Brian Eno
Vocals: Megan Thee Stallion (with Courtney Love on backing)
Percussion (Bez): John Maus.

Actually sounds like a horrible band but I bet it would be a fun party.

GO SEE THIS FILM: Requiem For A Dream! It’s Aronofsky’s second film and he absolutely kills it. It’s a really intense fast-paced film about addiction. The last 10 minutes destroyed me the first time I saw it.
GO READ THIS BOOK: Hopscotch by Julio Cortazar. A surreal and romantic portrait of 1920’s Paris. I’ve been reading it over and over since age 15 and I can always find a new beautiful phrase in there.
GREAT LOST BAND/ARTIST: Datblygu. Really sick Welsh post-punk from the 80’s. Ceredigion’s answer to Ian Curtis.
WOULDN’T BE CAUGHT DEAD SUPPORTING: I think I can speak on behalf of the band by saying we would never, never, never want to support Belk.
LONDON, L.A OR LEEDS?: Leeds! London’s expensive and LA’s too hot.

AND FINALLY… AS YOU LEAVE THE STAGE, WHAT ARE YOUR PARTING WORDS?
Check out our new single ‘Dense Worship’ out now on Come Play With Me! Oh and don’t listen to Belk.
