Sindhu Vee was born and raised in India and has received degrees from Delhi, Oxford (for which she got a Radhakrishnan scholarship), McGill and Chicago Universities and also has half a PHD! After a very short stint being an Yves San Laurent model, she changed direction putting her qualifications to good use and had a successful career in investment banking. She has three kids, including two teenagers, with her Danish husband and owns a bizarrely gigantic Labrador… and now in her early 40s Sindhu decided it was time to change direction and make her parents proud by starting a career in comedy.

Her new stand-up tour ‘Sandhog’ is about how exhausting and complicated it is to love our children, spouse and parents, but how inescapable the urge is to love them as fully as we can. We caught up with Sindhu to find out her ‘Famous Last Words’…

Last thing you did that made you feel good?
Well, I’ve been on a very restrictive diet the last two weeks and I haven’t cheated once. No caffeine, no sugar, no alcohol, no grains, no fun.. wait, not that last thing. That makes me feel good. I mean, I feel like I’m living life in faded colours and am possibly the most boring person on earth BUT I feel virtuous and yesterday I *think* my husband complimented my brighter skin tone (I can’t know for sure, I had the blender on making a green smoothie – bleurgh… so yeah, feeling good.

“I hope he reads this”

Last night on Earth… What’s your poison?
Proper masala chai with 3 tsp sugar. With full fat milk, ginger, cardamom and cooked over the stove like proper chai should be. Because its comforting, makes everything seem okay and I don’t want to be drinking alcohol because its my last night and I want to be able to remember it vividly.

Last supper… What are you ordering?
South Indian food: ghee dosa, modhapordhi, coconut jaggery poli, curd-rice.

Last person you’d want to share a drink with?
My husband (I hope he reads this and weeps with gratitude and surprise). This drink would not be masala chai. It would be a white Russian because he introduced me to it.

Last time you shed a tear and why?
I missed my Mom. She lives in India and I wished she was here. So I called her and within minutes she’d said something to annoy me, so the tears reversed themselves right back into my tear ducts and all was fine.

“Intense focus”

Last refuge… where would you go?
Wherever my family was… by which I mean I would round them all up and take them to India (which is where I intend to go as my last refuge). We’d go to my parents house and ask my Mom to cook my favourite things (see above).

Last the course… tips on loot, love & life?
Loot: you only ever need enough to feel free.
Love: exists only with sacrifice and compromise.
Life: is better than the alternatives.

Last but one… random question: Tell us about something that interests you that nobody else knows about. Like Gaelic football… or porcelain.
Origami – the precision and intense focus of folding paper into such subtle and delicate forms is astounding to me. I can’t even make a paper plane that will fly.
