Huddersfield’s one-man collaborative force – blues, drum n bass, electronica, Tony Benn…

YOUR NAME: Pat Fulgoni.
WHAT DO YOU DO/PLAY?
I’m a vocalist mainly – with lots of drum and bass artists at the moment, but also rock, jazz, soul, house vocals. I also produce, play keyboards and occasionally trumpet for other bands. I’ve collaborated with artists including Leeds Festival’s dance stage headliners Camo & Krooked, Technimatic, Vanguard Project, Zion Train, London Elektricity, Ralph Lawson, Gary Lucas, Matt Bourne, Dexcell, Jon Kennedy, Cabinet of Millionaires. Even the late, great Tony Benn MP. There’s been so many collaborations really. Also, I’ve recently started a new blues band loosely known as The Pat Fulgoni Blues Experience and have almost finished an album’s worth of electronica that will hopefully see the light of day in 2019.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN TOGETHER AS A BAND/PLAYING MUSIC?
Been in bands since the 1990s. Kava Kava was DIY and we got to play China, Europe, USA and all over the place! I’ve been singing the ‘drum and bass’ genre since about 2007.

GIVE US THREE REASONS WHY WE SHOULD TRACK DOWN, LISTEN AND DISCOVER YOUR MUSIC?
Katie Hasty from Billboard Magazine once came to see me play and said I “could sing a pearl from its oyster.” I love that quote. I’ve had a few tunes in US TV series like Weeds and John from Cincinnati and on the wireless, so I must, in some way, be sonically pleasing. I’ve got a tonne of tunes waiting for you on my Soundcloud, ranging from blues to psychedelia to house to drum n bass releases on various uber cool labels. Lastly, if you don’t, I’ll hunt you down and lick your face!

WHERE DO YOU SOUND BEST – FESTIVAL, CLUB, BEDROOM – OR SOMEWHERE ELSE? Festivals.

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST…
RECORD? ELO, ‘Mr Blue Sky’.
CD? Queen’s Greatest Hits.
DOWNLOAD? Kava Kava, ‘Funked Up and Freaked Out’.

SO, WHEN IT ALL GOES RIGHT AND YOU’VE GOT A MANSION AND A SUPERMODEL GIRL/BOYFRIEND, WHAT WILL BE YOUR BIGGEST MUSICAL INDULGENCE?
I think I’m going to record my solo album in a swimming pool and spend a lot of time experimenting with the acoustics by filling the pool with milk.

SO, WHEN IT ALL GOES WRONG AND YOU’VE ACRIMONIOUSLY BROKEN UP CITING HUGE MUSICAL DIFFERENCES, WHAT DO YOU FALL BACK ON?
A cardboard box…

WHO ARE YORKSHIRE’S FINEST IN CULTURE, SPORT AND MUSIC?
On a band tip, there’s so many. I had some great local bands going through a Yorkshire Showcase out at SXSW in the States that I used to put on, that deserve a special shout out including: Pulled Apart by Horses, Dinosaur Pile Up and Rolo Tomassi. How many World Cup squad members had a Yorkshire connection? Jamie Vardy, Harry Maguire, Fabian Delph, Gary Cahill, John Stones, lots of them. But a special shout out should go to Ross Peltier and my nephew, Reuben Noble Lazarus. On a Huddersfield cultural tip, we seem to be falling over actors and actresses too from Patrick Stewart to Jodie Whittaker and Lena Headey. An amazing track record from the ‘Hudd!’

NAME YOUR SUPERGROUP – WHO’S PLAYING WHAT AND WHO’S ON VOCALS?
Once did a gig at Irish Centre Leeds supporting the late great Gil Scott Heron. I had no idea that he wanted to duet, so this is my chance: Me and Gil Scott Heron, vocals; Jimi Hendrix, guitars; David Holmes, beats and electronics; Berlin Philharmonic, orchestra.

GO SEE THIS FILM: The Godfather.
GO READ THIS BOOK: Hell’s Angels by Hunter S Thompson.
GREAT LOST BAND/ARTIST: The Misunderstood.
WOULDN’T BE CAUGHT DEAD SUPPORTING: Mr Blobby.
LONDON, LA OR LEEDS?: Huddersfield!

AND FINALLY… AS YOU LEAVE THE STAGE, WHAT ARE YOUR PARTING WORDS.
So long, and thanks for all the fish.
