Reaven are a French electro pop band from Paris and Troyes – here’s a chat with singer-guitarist Romeo…

What’s the story behind your latest single, and what does it mean to you?
Our latest single is called ‘Escape’. The song was created during the quarantine, in the middle of the night. We wanted to express through music, and this (homemade) video, the struggle we are all living these days. For some people, it is a physical struggle – the fact of being locked up in small spaces. For others, it’s a psychological fight. We all need to escape a bit from reality from time to time, especially when daily life is getting complicated. This song reflects what we feel during this period. Tough moments, good moments. But above all, we will never stop believing that there will be brighter days. We’re all together in the same boat. And sooner or later, we will all escape this rough time together.

What was the hardest part about putting this release together, and why?
Actually, it was not that hard to make. The inspiration was here so the recording was easy, BUT making the homemade video was really complicated. We did everything on our own and I can assure you, making a 4K music video when you’re just two people – at the same time behind and in front of the camera – it’s really not easy! (laughs)

You produced the release – what do you enjoy the most about producing your own material?
I really like this way of doing it, ‘cause we take the time to explore the sound possibilities properly. And also, we have control over the result, so we can make it sound like we want.

What do you want the listener to take away from hearing your music?
Emotions and feelings, I guess. I want them to listen to the song and think that it’s a bit “their” song.

How does a track normally come together for the band? Can you tell us a bit about that process?
I compose mostly the melody and the instrumental part (piano or guitar) and then I work with Vince (drummer of the band). Then, we start to arrange the songs and add each instrument step by step.

reaven interview french bandHow would you say that the sound of your band has changed over the last year?
We grew up. We do have a bigger experience than before, and we avoid mistakes we made in the way of producing our sound. I think we just keep on exploring things, but with more patience.

Which bands/artists have influenced you the most since you started your own band/project, and why?
The Beatles always had, and still have, a great influence on me. I always loved their songs, and the way they build melodies and harmonies.

When the world is back to normal, where would you really like to tour, and why?
In the USA, ‘cause we never gave a tour there and we were supposed to tour the East Coast for the first time on a six week tour this year. But of course, for now, it’s cancelled…

If you could only pick one track for our reader to listen to, to get a taster of your music, which one would you go for, and why?
Maybe ‘Unbreakable’ for the rock side, or ‘Escape’ because it’s our latest creation.

Where do you see your band in five years’ time?
On the road (again), giving our first world tour I hope!

The single ‘Escape’ by Reaven is out now and available on all channels.
