Modern acoustic soul from LA, here’s GoldFord…

How did you get the title of your latest release, and what does it mean to you?
I wrote ‘Walk with Me’ at the beginning of quarantine just as the world was falling apart. Everything felt divided. We were locked in our homes, wiping down our groceries, isolated from each other. Meanwhile there were BLM protests and riots happening down the street from my house. I wrote it thinking about what I needed to hear in that moment. To me, it’s a song about unity and togetherness. Its been a really tough time for everyone. To think something I wrote could help somebody through this means everything. May this song help bring us back together somehow.

What was the hardest part about putting this release together, and why?
The restraints from Covid. It changed how we could record it, perform it and get out there. But we’re doing the best we can. Thank you for your help spreading it!

Who produced the release – what did they bring to it? If you produced it yourselves what do enjoy most about producing your own material?
My friend AG co-wrote and produced it. She has a gift for capturing the essence of a song while giving it brilliant colours and feeling in the way she produces the vocal then builds around it.

What do you want the listener to take away from listening to your music?
Hope. That we can make it through. Connection. That we’re not so alone in our thoughts, feelings and experiences. We’re all connected.

How does a track normally come together? Can you tell us something about the process?
It normally starts on my phone voice memo, trying to catch the little bits that come. Sometimes in gibberish that barely sounds like English, sometimes in the shower humming a melody. Sometimes it’s an entire chorus or verse about something I’m going through. Then it builds from there. I find the more I let go of my need to create something perfect, the more that comes through. It’s a battle between pursuit and patience.

What band/artists have influenced you the most since you started this project, and why?
Bill Withers, because he says o much in such a simple way and reaches everyone. Labrinth, because he pushes the boundaries of creativity in the most inspiring ways to me.

When the world is back to normal where would like to tour, and why?
The UK and Europe. Because there are so many different cultures and countries in such close proximity… and because I love a great curry.

If you could pick one track for our readers to listen to in order to get a taste of your music, what would you pick, and why?
I would say ‘Walk with Me’. It’s got the soul I grew up on, the truth I was raised to believe in and this love I have for getting to do this.

What ambitions do you have for the band/your career?
Only to travel the world making music that makes me feel something. Make it with incredibly inspiring people that push me to be better and connect with as many of you who feel it too.

Finally, as you leave the stage, what are your parting words?
“Nobody has a clue what they’re doing. Stop caring. Start creating.” Me to myself.
