Dylan James interview

London singer-songwriter leaving the home demos behind and stepping out…

What’s the title of your latest release, and what does it mean to you?
‘I’m Not Superman’. This track runs deep through my veins and tells a story of an invisible mask faking somebody I wasn’t.

What was the hardest part about putting this release together, and why?
I have a great team, so putting the release together was quite easy. The video took some thought, but I’m glad we took our time because it tells the story the song deserves.

What do enjoy most about producing your own material?
The freedom to express my lyrics in big melodies.

What do you want the listener to take away from listening to your music?
I want them to relate to the words and feel the emotion of my songs.

How does a track normally come together? Can you tell us something about the process?
I don’t have a formula. Sometimes it’s two words that can spark the lyrics, other times it’s a picture in my head, a memory, a feeling, or just a collection of beautiful chords.

What band/artists have influenced you the most since you started this project, and why?
War on Drugs, The Roses, Ben Howard, Lord Huron, Springsteen and Sam Fender. These artists write true deep meaningful lyrics and inspire me to write great melodies.

What countries would you like to tour? Are there any standout venues you’d like to play in?
I would love to tour Brazil… Such beautiful people and I’m sure they would throw a big party! In honor of Pele and Senna.

If you could pick one track for our readers to listen to in order to get a taste of your music, what would you pick, and why?
I think ‘Hide’. It goes as close to the bone lyrically as I could go, but showcases the album in a beautiful way

What ambitions do you have for the band/your career?
I would love to play more festivals… particularly Glastonbury!

Finally, as you leave the stage, what are your parting words?
I just want to let people hear my music. It’s been a long journey writing and producing the album. I don’t mind what people think but I’m sure most people will relate to the life stories I’m writing about.
