Residence Inn by Marriott Manchester Piccadilly – Hotel Review (3)

There are city-centre hotels that give you somewhere to sleep, and then there are those that make you feel as though you could actually live there. Residence Inn by Marriott Manchester Piccadilly very much falls into the latter category.

Situated on Laystall Street, just a short walk from Manchester Piccadilly station, the hotel is ideally placed for exploring the city without being right in the middle of the hustle and bustle. The Northern Quarter, shops, restaurants and Manchester’s entertainment venues are all within easy reach, making the location particularly appealing for a weekend in the city.

On-street car parking is available behind the hotel.

If you are going to a concert at Co-op Live or attending an event at the Etihad Stadium, both venues are just two stops away. If you are feeling energetic, you can walk there in around 30 minutes.

“Useful touch”

The first thing that strikes you is how modern and relaxed the hotel feels. Rather than the sometimes clinical atmosphere associated with business accommodation, there’s a warm, contemporary feel throughout, with communal spaces that encourage you to linger rather than simply pass through.

But it’s the rooms where Residence Inn really makes its mark. Designed as suites rather than conventional hotel rooms, they are spacious, thoughtfully laid out and equipped with kitchen facilities, including a hob, fridge, microwave and dishwasher. It’s a particularly useful touch if you’re staying for several nights or simply fancy the option of preparing something yourself rather than eating out every evening.

The beds are comfortable, the décor is understated and there’s plenty of space to relax, while the kitchenette gives the room a genuine apartment feel. It’s the sort of setup that makes you quickly forget you’re staying in a hotel.

“Little conveniences”

Another big plus is the complimentary breakfast. There’s a decent selection to get the day started, with cooked breakfast staples alongside pastries, cereals and other continental options. It can become busy at peak times, but that’s hardly surprising given the hotel’s popularity.

Service is another area where the hotel scores highly. Staff were consistently friendly, welcoming and helpful, and that personal touch made a big difference. It’s easy for large chain hotels to feel anonymous, but the team here generally manages to create a much more personable experience.

There are also some genuinely useful extras, including a fitness centre, complimentary laundry facilities and Wi-Fi, which was very quick. For longer stays, those little conveniences can be worth far more than flashy hotel extras.

“Versatile”

The hotel’s current housekeeping schedule is also less frequent than that of some traditional hotels, which is worth knowing if you’re booking a longer stay.

Minor niggles aside, Residence Inn by Marriott Manchester Piccadilly gets the important things right. It combines the convenience of a central Manchester hotel with the space and practicality of an apartment, while maintaining the standards you would expect from Marriott.

For a city break, concert trip or longer stay, it’s an impressively versatile option. The rooms are comfortable, the location is excellent, breakfast is included and the staff add a welcome dose of warmth, all delivered with a huge Northern welcome.
