4 Steps to Successfully Entertain Your Children in the Holidays
With the summer holidays ending in the UK, many parents are looking forward to October half term in just over a month’s time.
When you’re a working parent, it can be challenging to find ways to entertain your children over a long period of time, and maintain your sanity!
If you need some essential tips and tricks for keeping your children busy during the holidays, here are our four favourite tips for success.
1. Build a Mud Kitchen
During the warmer months of the year, you could create a mud kitchen in your garden for your little ones to make mud pies.
To make an effective mud kitchen, you will need a sink, bowl and utensils for your child’s creations, and good quality clean topsoil to play with.
You can find soil at garden centres, and you can use small pots and add flowers for a homely touch. Your children can care for the flowers as their responsibility and ensure that they keep them thriving and well watered.
Why not get your children involved in decorating or painting their plant pots to put their own individual stamp on their mud kitchen?
Companies like Lawcris supply high quality worktop materials for your mud kitchen made from highly durable melamine and laminate so that your children can express their creativity to the max.
2. Treasure Hunts
A great way to keep the children entertained and away from screens, treasure hunts can be conducted both indoors and outdoors depending on the weather.
Whether you set up your treasure hunt in the garden, or within the house, you can use everyday objects to make your hunt extra special.
You could theme your treasure hunt for the Easter holidays by using hollow eggs from retailers like Amazon to hide clues or to exchange for prizes.
To make it an extra interesting game, why not add prizes or time limits for a competitive edge? Many siblings will revel in the opportunity to compete with each other!
3. Cosy Movie Day
This is a great activity for the evenings or afternoons when the weather is wet and cold. Why not create a fort with blankets and cushions on the sofa, and put on a Disney movie?
You could create a snack tray by microwaving some popcorn, and portioning out some snacks into small dishes like pretzels, sweets or healthier alternatives like vegetable sticks, fruit or nuts. If you have a fire or log burner, lighting this will also add to the cosy atmosphere and provide additional warmth.
Having this downtime could be good for winding down at the end of a busy day, or for providing some well-needed passive entertainment whilst parents complete work during their day – the choice is yours!
4. Geocaching
This is a fantastic activity for the whole family, and can be done anywhere in the country. Simply download the geocaching app and get searching!
Many geocaches are cleverly hidden in plain sight. Don’t forget to record your discovery in the log book and leave a memento behind for the next visitor. You can share your find in online forums or on social media to connect with others who are also interested in geocaching.
