Rudy’s Pizza Napoletana, Harrogate – Restaurant Review

By Graham Clark, May 2026
Opened at the beginning of April, Rudy’s has arrived in Harrogate. The pizza restaurant is already firmly established in the North West and has, in recent years, moved across the Pennines into Yorkshire, opening in Leeds and York.
The Harrogate restaurant, on John Street in the former Banyan bar and restaurant, has been completely refurbished in the style of other Rudy’s restaurants. Think concrete floors, plenty of wood panelling, an open kitchen and blackboards displaying the menus – and, unique to the Harrogate restaurant, old film posters in Italian.
With plenty of other pizza restaurants in Harrogate, Rudy’s is offering something different. The pizzas here are Neapolitan-style, characteristically thin with a soft crust and simple toppings. The dough is made fresh on-site every day, taking 24 hours to double ferment – and just 60 seconds to cook. All the ovens are handmade by Stefano Ferrara in Naples. Diners are encouraged to fold the pizza for strength, or tuck in with a knife and fork.
“Well-priced”
The Harrogate restaurant can seat up to 150 diners, with the option of outdoor seating. Well-behaved dogs are allowed, and water bowls are provided for canine guests.
With the restaurant having been open for only a few weeks, the visit on a Friday night found it heaving – and, like any pizzeria one might find in Italy, Rudy’s was noisy, lively and buzzing with atmosphere.
Many of the staff are temporarily based in Harrogate from other Rudy’s restaurants during the initial launch, though this was a well-oiled machine, with everyone knowing what was required of them.
Drinks are well-priced, with a glass of Sauvignon Blanc starting at £6.80.
“Something for all tastes”
To start, there was the Garlic Bread with mozzarella and garlic butter. Unless diners have a big appetite, this is one that is large enough to share, with just the right amount of mozzarella and garlic butter, so that neither flavour overpowers the other.
The reviewer’s partner’s Rocket and Grana Padano salad came with a little too much balsamic and honey vinaigrette for her liking. What should have been a sprinkling was more like a storm of vinaigrette – sometimes less is more.
With more than 16 different pizzas to choose from – Rudy’s does not do pasta, it is just pizza here – there is something for all tastes, including three seasonal specials. One pizza that is not on the menu, though, is the celebrated four-cheese pizza. Not a problem, however, as diners can add Gorgonzola and smoked mozzarella to a Margherita pizza and, in this case, it becomes a three-cheese pizza. Having visited Naples many times, the reviewer can safely say that the pizza here at Rudy’s is the real deal.
“Fresh every day”
One pizza synonymous with Italian pizzerias is the Romagnola, which comes with rocket, Emilia-Romagna aged prosciutto and Grana Padano cheese. This lighter-tasting pizza was savoury, contrasted well with the other flavours, and seemed to be a good choice for the reviewer’s partner.
Italians do not really go big on desserts – it is usually tiramisu, panna cotta, tart or cake. Made fresh every day, the tiramisu came in a glass and was indeed very fruity. Italians love their chocolate, though it is not certain that chocolate brownie often appears on dessert menus in Italy. However, it all seemed to be in order in Harrogate, served with some seriously creamy vanilla ice cream. As the server was quick to proclaim that the brownie was his favourite too, no matter how many times diners are told “it’s a good choice”, he was right this time.
“Authentic”
Rudy’s deserves to thrive in Harrogate. For a start, its prices are a lot easier to digest than those of some competitors – that is not to say the pizzas are below standard. Far from it. This is probably the closest diners will get to that authentic Neapolitan pizza taste without getting on a plane and finding their boarding pass has Napoli as the destination.
