Hamilton – Review – Bradford Alhambra Theatre

By Christine Goode, February 2025
In 2025, Bradford has taken its place as the City of Culture, and the Bradford Alhambra is pulling out all the stops as the juggernaut of musical theatre, Hamilton, comes to town. The much-acclaimed production is gracing the Alhambra’s stage for a seven-week run, captivating audiences with its compelling narrative and revolutionary music. Having had the pleasure of attending, I must admit that Hamilton was not initially at the top of my list of musicals to see. However, that has dramatically changed, and I have now joined the legion of fans who simply cannot get enough of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s musical masterpiece.
Hamilton is an extraordinary rags-to-riches story that follows the life of Founding Father Alexander Hamilton and his pivotal role in the American Revolution and the political history of the early United States. Lin-Manuel Miranda composed this remarkable musical over a seven-year period, beginning in 2008, with its eventual premiere in 2015 in Lower Manhattan, where Miranda himself played the title role. The show’s immense success is undeniable, achieving a staggering eleven awards and delighting audiences worldwide.
“Powerful and emotive”
Hamilton stands out not only for its historical significance but also for its unique blend of musical styles. The show brings together hip-hop, jazz, R&B, and traditional Broadway, creating an auditory feast. Additionally, the choreography features street dance, hip-hop, and even nods to ballet and tap, alongside physical theatre elements, ensuring there is something for everyone. Despite its heavy subject matter, which is sung and rapped throughout, those who typically enjoy more traditional shows should set any reservations aside and prepare to be thoroughly amazed.
As we entered the theatre and took our seats early, the anticipation and excitement in the air were palpable. The fire curtain was still down, but soon it lifted to unveil one of the most impressive sets I have seen in a long time. The audience audibly gasped at the sight of the massive brickwork and wood set, reflecting the 18th century and featuring nautical ropes, catwalks, and scaffolding. From the very beginning, it was clear that this performance was going to be special.
The lights dimmed, and the audience, already buzzing with excitement, erupted into cheers as the opening notes of the title song, ‘Alexander Hamilton’, filled the theatre. The energy was electric as Hamilton, played by Marley Fenton, delivered a powerful and emotive performance, alongside powerhouse Aaron Burr, played by Billy Nevers, Thomas Jefferson, played by Ashley J. Daniels, and my personal favourite, King George, played by Louis Maskell—who also slipped in a rather uncanny yet current impression of the new President of the United States! The entire cast was strong throughout, and I could rave for hours about them.
“First-class ensemble”
The choreography by Andy Blankenbuehler is breathtaking—a variety of styles confidently performed by a first-class ensemble, who also change scenes as they effortlessly move around the stage. You hardly notice the transition between scenes, with the revolving stage adding yet another dynamic element to the production. There is so much to take in—you’ll need to go again!
The audience’s reception of Hamilton was overwhelmingly positive, with a diverse crowd spanning different age groups and backgrounds. It is a testament to Hamilton’s broad appeal and its ability to unite people through the power of storytelling and music.
Hamilton’s run at the Bradford Alhambra is a cultural event that should not be missed. It is a testament to the city’s vibrant arts scene and its ability to attract world-renowned productions. Whether you are a seasoned theatregoer or new to the world of musicals, Hamilton promises an unforgettable experience. So, embrace the opportunity and prepare to be swept off your feet by its magic.
