A Q&A with Natalie McCool

Euphoric indie pop, acoustic warmth, alternative electro…

What’s the title of your latest release, and what does it mean to you?
‘A Little More Time’ is a euphoric, expansive celebration of youthful optimism in the face of monotonous adulthood, holding onto vivid images and sensory experiences from a wilderness that comes so easily to youth, but is taken for granted in later years. It’s the focus track on my upcoming album, Good Soul.

What was the hardest part about putting this release together, and why?
Putting a timeline together for the release took a little bit of consideration – mainly because the album is split into two emotional halves – a brighter side and a moodier side. So, first of all, it wasn’t clear which way to present it. I feel like it starts with a summer vibe, then gets into deep, dark autumn.

Who produced the release – what did they bring to it? If you produced it yourselves, what do you enjoy most about producing your own material?
I love making a track real, so that I can place myself inside it. I think I love experimenting – creating an agency over every sound in a track. You know that no one else has done that unless you tell them to, or if they do it, it’s equal to your ideas. Working with other producers has had a hugely positive impact on my mindset – it’s allowed me to expand my horizon.

What do you want the listener to take away from listening to your music?
For listeners to connect and find something that speaks to them. When I record my music, it’s like a journal of small, important moments to me – so I hope they can connect to that.

How does a track normally come together? Can you tell us something about the process?
It usually starts with a beat, and I will build on top of that. Once the concept is there, I work quite quickly (when I’m inspired, I write fast!).

What band/artists have influenced you the most since you started this project, and why?
I love similar artists like HAIM, Madonna, Self Esteem, and even Taylor Swift – each character in all of those acts mentioned is completely unafraid to carry a strong message with courageous pop music. And I also admire St Vincent – sound-wise, her production is amazing.

What countries would you like to tour? Are there any standout venues you’d like to play in?
I’d love to play in Europe. I’ve been lucky to have secured spot shows in Germany, Spain, France, Italy, and Denmark, but I want to go beyond that. Japan and Korea, I’d love to go to! My dream is to play as many festivals as possible – I’d love to play Glastonbury and Red Rocks in the USA.

If you could pick one track for our readers to listen to in order to get a taste of your music, what would you pick, and why?
‘A Little More Time’, which is out now! It’s got stunning harmonies, guitars, and electric synth textures, and my signature voice – all wrapped up in an ambient pop song.

What ambitions do you have for the band/your career?
Honestly, I just want as many people to resonate with my music as possible! And to be in a position where I can sustain it financially.

Finally, as you leave the stage, what are your parting words?
“There’s so much beauty through the darkness.” (I’d hold hands with someone from the front row!)
