A Q&A With Kingsfoil

Alt Rock Meets New Wave, from Bournemouth…

What’s the title of your latest release, and what does it mean to you?
Newest single is called ‘Whips & Chains,’ a funky tune. We got to be robots/agents in the video—who hasn’t always wanted to be a robot for a day? It draws on themes from The Matrix and Scott Pilgrim vs. the World films. This first batch of tracks means a lot to me; it was my first time recording this way. I’ve always played in punk bands, which is a very DIY scene, so recording with a producer was a new experience for me and really tested me as a musician.

What was the hardest part about putting this release together, and why?
For me personally? Drumming to the click track—it took me sooooo many takes.

Who produced the release – what did they bring to it? If you produced it yourselves what do enjoy most about producing your own material?
Jack Grace produced it, who is a brilliant musician, singer, producer—probably lover. He’s good at a lot. Nathan Fuller did a fantastic job producing and filming our music videos too. Tim is the main songwriter, but we each put our own stamp on his songs.

What do you want the listener to take away from listening to your music?
A CD ‘cos they bought it off us hopefully 😉

How does a track normally come together? Can you tell us something about the process?
Tim will have a song—hook, lyrics, riff—and we’ll play it and then tweak it as a band. Then Mikey solos over all of it.

What band/artists have influenced you the most since you started this project, and why?
My influences are mainly glam metal and punk, but really I think every band that makes it to touring level offers something to learn from and take influence.

What countries would you like to tour? Are there any standout venues you’d like to play in?
Everywhere! I’ve toured a fair bit in other bands. Germany is always amazing; they look after the bands well. Japan is great too—a mental country. I’d love to go to America one day. Starting in the UK makes sense though! I’ll play anywhere—people’s houses, squats, O2s, dive bars. Locally, I’d love to play the 1865 in Southampton, the Exchange in Bristol, and the Edge in Pompey. We’re at the Railway in Winchester in December, always wanted to play there.

A Q&A With Kingsfoil

If you could pick one track for our readers to listen to in order to get a taste of your music, what would you pick, and why?
‘Warriors,’ our first single, I’d say. Catchy chorus, heavy riff, cool solo. And the video was great fun; we went larping in the woods in the middle of winter.

What ambitions do you have for the band/your career?
I’d like to get on the road, play the wheels off it until we can do this full-time.

Finally, as you leave the stage, what are your parting words?
Support local music!
