Yorkshire’s Premier League Hopes: Leeds & Hull City Season Preview

While most football fans are focusing on the World Cup throughout the summer, Premier League clubs are busy preparing for domestic football’s return. And that is no different at the two Yorkshire clubs in the top flight.

Both Leeds United and Hull City will enter the 2026/27 campaign in high spirits after securing their Premier League status for next season. However, supporters of both clubs know that they will need to be ruthless to stay up.

Currently, Hull are favourites to be relegated next season at 1/4, while Leeds’ odds are not much better at 11/2. Fans might well back them to survive and place wagers on upcoming matches, but it will take smart business in the transfer window for those odds of relegation to lengthen.

The good news is that there is plenty of time to improve before the first day of the football season on Saturday 22nd August. So, what do both Yorkshire teams need to do between now and then?

Leeds United looking to build on promising season

Leeds accomplished their primary goal of survival last year with flying colours. Ending their first season back in the Premier League in 14th place was an achievement, but they cannot afford to rest on their laurels, or else they might be dragged into a relegation battle next year.

The Whites made 10 signings last summer, but still want attacking reinforcements. Daniel Farke and the board are reportedly looking for a creative midfielder who can get the best out of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, but there is also scope to look for a new goalkeeper, after mixed performances throughout the previous campaign from Lucas Perri and Karl Darlow.

Harry Wilson is a name who has been linked with Elland Road, as he has not extended his contract with Fulham yet. Set to be a free agent on 30th June, the 29-year-old’s 10 goals and seven assists will be a welcome addition for Leeds.

Due to the spending power of the Premier League, the dream for Daniel Farke next season will be to build on last year’s success and secure another mid-table finish. However, the reality is that anything beyond avoiding relegation is a bonus.

Hull are ambitious but battling against the odds

Hull City beat the odds last season to end a nine-year spell away from the Premier League, earning promotion when projections based on expected points had them in 23rd place. The Tigers will need that same fortune to secure survival next year, along with a summer of healthy recruitment.

Sergej Jakirovic’s side will use Sunderland’s promotion and subsequent transfer window as a model for their upcoming campaign. While they won’t be able to spend the £155m that the Black Cats did after their play-off final win, Hull’s owner Acun Ilicali will still look to recruit well.

Reports have already linked them with players boasting top-flight experience, such as Newcastle United’s Nick Pope. However, they are under no illusions that multiple signings of that same calibre will be needed for the Tigers to stay up next season. Only time will tell if Jakirovic and his new squad can upset the odds once again.
