Fearns Restaurant Leeds review

By Kirsty Reid, January 2025

There’s nothing quite like a Sunday roast to round off the week. But there’s something about having one in January that just hits differently. It’s the ultimate comfort food — warm, hearty, and exactly what you need to combat the winter chill.

I love a Sunday roast. But cooking one at home is not my forte, I can never get the timings right for everything. And, my Yorkshire puddings leave much to be desired (Aunt Bessie usually saves the day!). I find it’s much easier — and far more enjoyable — to leave Sunday roasts to the pros.

So, when I was invited to try Fearns’ Sunday Service menu, I jumped at the chance. The opportunity to enjoy a delicious roast dinner without lifting a finger? Count me in.

“Tranquil heaven”

Tucked away at Leeds Docks, Fearns is a tranquil haven, worlds apart from the hustle and bustle of the city centre. It’s located in the same building as Department, a co-working space, making it easy to find. Parking is a breeze, too, with CitiPark Leeds Dock just a stone’s throw away.

With its industrial vibe, the venue is bright and airy, thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows that bathe the space in natural light.

Despite the open-plan layout, Fearns feels cozy. Low-hanging lights are perfectly placed to set an intimate mood after dark, while wooden tables, sofa benches, and a touch of greenery help create a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Bifold doors lead to an outdoor terrace overlooking the boulevard. On a warmer day, I’d be tempted to dine alfresco, but since it’s mid-January, we opted to sit inside, where I spotted two dogs with their families. Bonus points for being a dog-friendly venue.

“Simple, fresh and packed with flavour”

Our server swiftly brought over our drinks while we browsed the menu. I opted for a refreshing Marlish Sparkling Raspberry Water (£2.50), while Kyle settled on an oat milk cappuccino (£3.75), later followed by a Marlish Sparkling Water (£2.50).

Fearns’ Sunday Service menu offers two courses for £25 or three for £30. As if that wasn’t great value already, to help banish January blues, diners visiting between 12noon and 4pm every Sunday in January can enjoy 25% off the Sunday roast menu.

Kyle kicked things off with the bruschetta. Vibrant, juicy tomatoes and olives atop crunchy sourdough. Simple, fresh and packed with flavour, it tasted as good as it looked.

“Divine”

Then came the stars of the show. Kyle went for the pulled lamb shoulder, while I opted for the black pepper sausages. Each dish was served with all the trimmings — crispy roast potatoes, perfectly tender swede, (slightly too) crunchy carrots, and a huge Yorkshire pudding that’s fluffy yet crispy (no Aunt Bessie in sight).

Kyle’s lamb was divine — fall-apart tender with a subtle sweetness that balanced the dish perfectly. My black pepper sausages were equally delicious, with just the right amount of seasoning.

The portions were generous, but for anyone craving more, there’s an array of tempting sides and small plates to choose from, including deep-fried halloumi, mac and cheese, kimchi, and chips.

Having skipped a starter, I saved room for dessert — and I’m glad I did. The brownie was divine! Served with ice cream, it was a chocolate lover’s dream — warm, gooey, and intensely chocolatey. The best kind of sweet treat.

Leeds is full of amazing eateries but Fearns ranks high on the list. Whether you’re after a coffee, light bite, lunch or cocktail — Fearns is the perfect spot.
