Introducing: Kimber
York duo’s shimmering alt-pop…
YOUR NAME: Mikey Wilson.
BAND NAME: Kimber.
WHAT DO YOU DO/PLAY? Predominantly I sing and Josh is the drummer, and we share everything else in-between. As production is at the heart of our writing it’s usually whoever discovers the sound plays the instrument.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN TOGETHER AS A BAND/PLAYING MUSIC?
We’ve spent the last decade working through different projects and guises before finding home with Kimber. This is our debut release.
GIVE US 3 REASONS WHY WE SHOULD TRACK DOWN, LISTEN AND DISCOVER YOUR MUSIC?
We write music with production at the heart. Our songs have lots of different layers and textures which are picked up through listening multiple times.
We’re vulnerable and authentic, not just lyrically but through the production as well. We try to avoid the cliché.
We’ve taken inspiration from various different genres and as such don’t feel trapped in one box. We use a lot of electronic sounds in our productions but always keep that live band feel at the heart.
WHERE DO YOU SOUND BEST – FESTIVAL, CLUB, BEDROOM – OR SOMEWHERE ELSE?
We’re most at home in the studio discovering new sounds and experimenting with tones and textures.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST…
RECORD? Shed 7 (a promo release).
CD? Pulp – ‘Common People’.
DOWNLOAD? Can’t fully remember, but something for the 00’s indie scene like Little Man Tate.
SO, WHEN IT ALL GOES RIGHT AND YOU’VE GOT A MANSION AND A SUPERMODEL GIRL/BOYFRIEND, WHAT WILL BE YOUR BIGGEST MUSICAL INDULGENCE?
We’d build our own studio
SO, WHEN IT ALL GOES WRONG AND YOU’VE ACRIMONIOUSLY BROKEN UP CITING HUGE MUSICAL DIFFERENCES, WHAT DO YOU FALL BACK ON?
Songwriting and producing for other artists
CITE SOME INTER-BAND MUSICAL DIFFERENCES…
Mikey’s got a guilty pleasure for 80’s synthwave.
WHO ARE YORKSHIRE’S FINEST IN CULTURE, SPORT AND MUSIC?
Jarvis Cocker is creative on several outputs and his influence on 90’s culture is still relevant today.
We’re both both big Leeds United fans.
Coming from York we have to give an honourable mention to Shed 7 as they were a big inspiration for the York music scene.
NAME YOUR SUPERGROUP – WHO’S PLAYING WHAT, WHO’S ON VOCALS AND WHO’S YOUR BEZ?
We’d have Matt Berninger (The National) on vocals, Mount Kimbie to produce, and Bon Iver and LCD Soundsystem in the band as well.
GO SEE THIS FILM: 24 Hour Party People.
GO READ THIS BOOK: Tortilla Flat (John Steinbeck).
GREAT LOST BAND/ARTIST: Joy Division.
WOULDN’T BE CAUGHT DEAD SUPPORTING: Coldplay.
LONDON, L.A OR LEEDS?: Leeds.
AND FINALLY… AS YOU LEAVE THE STAGE, WHAT ARE YOUR PARTING WORDS?
Where’s the aftershow?
The debut release from Kimber, ‘Like Shadows on the Wall’, is out now
