In recent years, more and more people have opted to look for holiday destinations in the UK instead of traveling abroad. Known as staycations, these are taking over the UK as it’s significantly easier and cheaper to stay in the UK than travel to another country. With more people than ever trying to save where they can, staycations offer a great alternative to holidays abroad and allow people to still get away and relax.

Whether you’re looking to get out and explore nature or stay in and play rainbow riches by the fire, it’s no wonder staycations have risen in popularity in recent years. One of the current most popular destinations is Yorkshire, with different holiday destinations, hotels and cottages frequently being fully booked year round, showing just how popular it is.

But why is Yorkshire one of the best staycation destinations around, and where in Yorkshire should you be looking to stay? Let’s find out.

York

If you fancy a weekend away in the UK and have a deep interest in history and heritage, then York could be the place for you. Whilst enjoying your stay, you’ll be able to explore the rich history on offer which includes the iconic York Minster, being able to walk along the medieval city walls and see the famous cobbled streets.

Not only this, but there are numerous different museums, riverside walks and tea rooms available for you to try out, meaning you’ll not run out of things to do anytime soon.

Harrogate

If you’re looking for a more relaxing and quiet getaway, then Harrogate could be the perfect place for you. Known for its spas and relaxation, it’s a great place to go and get away from all life’s worries and issues. Along with the spas, there’s also a number of different public gardens such as the Valley Gardens.

Harrogate is also home to the famous Turkish baths spa which has been lauded as one of the best around. After you’ve finished your spa treatments, you’re then able to take yourself off and have some afternoon tea at a number of different locations and finish the day off with a lovely scenic walk.

For people looking for a quiet getaway, this really is the perfect place for them.

Whitby

Whilst the other places on this list were mainly scenic walks, if you’re looking for something with a bit more water, then Whitby is the place to go. Located on the seafront, you’ll be able to watch the village boats go out each morning as you enjoy a coffee and breakfast.

There are numerous different cottages and bed and breakfasts available to stay in, with all of them located within walking distance to the seafront which offers some incredible coastal walks. If you’re thinking of a more seaside getaway, Whitby could be somewhere to consider.

Leeds

Away from the quiet getaways on this list, if you’re looking for somewhere a bit more lively and fast paced, then Leeds is the one to go for. The lively city is host to some fantastic shops, with great restaurants and a very exciting nightlife, this is a much more fast paced getaway than the others on this list.

Even though it’s a fast paced city, you’re still able to take your time and visit some of the sights Leeds has to offer. These are such places as the Royal Armouries and the Leeds Art Gallery, all places that are worth taking some time out of the weekend to visit.

Robin Hood’s Bay

A lesser known getaway destination compared to the others on this list, but one that shouldn’t be overlooked. Robin Hood’s Bay is a great small seaside fishing village is home to some incredible views with cliffs, small cottages and breathtaking coastal walks.

If you’re looking for a destination that not many people will know about and one where you’re able to relax in a tiny village, this could be one to try.

The North York Moors

Have you ever wanted to just take a scenic ride on a train without a destination at the end, just riding to take in all the sights you pass? Well at this destination you’re able to as you can ride the famous steam railway to get a first person view of all the best sights.

Once you’re finished on the train you’re able to then take a short walk to visit the small market town of Helmsley, with numerous different local items and produce being sold.

Staycations are on the rise with more and more people choosing to stay in the UK over going abroad. When deciding where to go, it can be difficult to decide as there’s so many places to go, hopefully this list has given you some inspiration on your next destination.
