Gin Making Class – Review

I recently checked out a new and exciting gin experience in the heart of Leeds city centre. The Liquor Studio is just moments away from the train station set above the Hedonist bar on Briggate.

The Liquor Studio manage a variety of events with gin at the heart of it all. I experienced the gin creation class which focused on making our own gin. I was the first to arrive and was greeted by one of the creators and hosts of the Liquor Studio.

The place had a unique and quirky vibe that caught my eye straight away. The first thing I noticed when walking through the studio was the wooden style workshop desks. These were set up individually with science-like equipment and tumblers ready to make our own gin. There was enough space for around 10 people and it was a great open plan environment to socialise as a group.

“Really informative”

Once I had walked through the studio, there was another level at the back where the magic would take place. More guests had arrived at this point so there was six of us ready to create. We were each given a delicious gin and tonic on arrival, and these would be complimentary throughout the evening.

There was a great selection of mixers on hand which were all very refreshing with the gin. The Liquor Studio used a gin called Boxer throughout the experience as they push for a more sustainable practise. And with a glass in hand, we sat at a large table were we began to learn all about the history of gin. It was really informative with many lightbulb moments allowing us all to chat, drink and discuss things in more detail.

After the educational bit, another element of the experience was discovering how our senses effect the way we taste gin. This was demonstrated with some fun experiments challenging taste, smell, touch, sight and sound. All the while our drinks stayed full as we discovered how botanicals create different gin combinations.

“My perfect bottle”

We were then taken down to the ‘lab’ to start creating our own gin masterpieces. I was really excited for this part and to experiment with flavours. After some trial and error, I had my perfect bottle of gin with a personalised Liquor Studio label too. And there we had it… my own Yorkshire Tea gin! Then at the end of the evening, I found out that if I make a log of my gin ingredients, the Liquor Studio team would be able to make it for me again. The small details definitely didn’t go unnoticed. And the hosts really did make the experience.

Overall, I can’t recommend the gin studio experience enough. Great for groups of friends, works night outs or a fun date night activity. It is well worth the cost of £74.95pp as you take away your own 50cl bottle of gin, a 70cl bottle of the Boxer gin, complimentary gin and tonics throughout the class and so much more.
