A Q&A With Modern Liv

Indie Rock with Global Roots…

What’s the title of your latest release, and what does it mean to you?
‘The Revenge of an Ugly Teenager’ is the first single from my new EP. It’s quite daunting, but I’m really excited to share it.

What was the hardest part about putting this release together, and why?
It can be hard to film content on a tiny budget—it’s really challenging to get the lighting right and create quality visuals, but we got there in the end.

Who produced the release – what did they bring to it? If you produced it yourselves what do you enjoy most about producing your own material?
Fionn Connolly produced it; I couldn’t do it without him because I’m not very skilled with production software yet. His musical expertise helped us incorporate a mandolin into the track.

What do you want the listener to take away from listening to your music?
I hope listeners feel a bit of warmth and companionship.

How does a track normally come together? Can you tell us something about the process?
Usually, I jot down lyrics on topics I want to write about, then spend a session with my guitar or piano to turn them into a cohesive song. For this track, I wrote it in one quick session.

A Q&A With Modern Liv

What band/artists have influenced you the most since you started this project, and why?
There are so many, but I get a lot of ideas from Phoenix and The Strokes in terms of instrumentation and effects.

What countries would you like to tour? Are there any standout venues you’d like to play in?
I’d love to tour around Canada because I’m Canadian, though I’ve never lived there—it would be great to connect with fans from there.

If you could pick one track for our readers to listen to in order to get a taste of your music, what would you pick, and why?
I’d pick ‘The Revenge of an Ugly Teenager’ because it draws on several genres and reflects the influences that shape my sound.

What ambitions do you have for your career?
I’d love to get to the point where I go on Tiny Desk.

Finally, as you leave the stage, what are your parting words?
Wish me luck!
