A Q&A With Frequency Overload

Heavy metal with a hardcore edge from New York…

What’s the title of your latest release, and what does it mean to you?
Our latest, and debut release, is Fate Anthropic. This album means so much to me. As a band, we came together quickly and cohesively. It is the firstborn child of Frequency Overload! The release of this album was like planting a flag in the metal world as if to say, “Yes, we have all been around for years in different projects, but here we stand!”

What was the hardest part about putting this release together, and why?
I would say the hardest part is self-financing our entire album, which is with SODEH Records now. We all have careers outside music and family responsibilities. It was really the families saying, “Holy sh*t, you guys have something here,” that helped us make that next commitment.

Who produced the release – what did they bring to it? If you produced it yourselves what do you enjoy most about producing your own material?
Joey Z, from Life of Agony, recorded and engineered a lot of it, but we produced it ourselves. Now, don’t get me wrong, having Joey Z mentoring us and hopping on backing vocals here and there was no joke! But he pointed out that production credits are for arrangements, etc.

What do you want the listener to take away from listening to your music?
I want the listener to take away the idea that Frequency Overload is a metal band that has something for everyone… even your mom. We are a diverse and enjoyable listen, according to the responses we have gotten. The idea of genre snobbery is perplexing to me. I have friends who get it and some who don’t. Some of our material is dark and thoughtful, but much is upbeat and fun!

How does a track normally come together? Can you tell us something about the process?
There are a few different ways that our songs take shape. Usually, one of the guys presents a riff or beat at rehearsal, and it builds. Other times, the guys will just start ad-lib jamming, and I will enunciate nonsense words just as a pattern idea. Many of the tracks on Fate Anthropic were written in whole by guitarist Corey Schaefer. He is a riff machine. So in that case, the whole band will learn and record something and present it to me so I can write the lyrics.

What band/artists have influenced you the most since you started this project, and why?
Since we started the project, I would have to say Life of Agony. Why? We don’t sound like them, but it’s being in contact with Joey Z all the time and going to see them live that has influenced us. He has been around and dealing with the industry a very long time. He has given us important insights and advice. I also like to see all our heroes from the ‘80s still doing it! Judas Priest, Maiden, and Accept are still killing it!

A Q&A With Frequency Overload

What countries would you like to tour? Are there any standout venues you’d like to play in?
Certainly England, Germany, and the Netherlands! These countries are big metal heads! I know support for all music exists everywhere, but the most support for metal would be those three, and of course, the rest of Europe. We would love to play Rock City in Nottingham, England.

If you could pick one track for our readers to listen to in order to get a taste of your music, what would you pick, and why?
I would pick ‘Love and Bullets’! This was the first song written by guitarist Corey Schaefer and drummer Kevin Daily. They wrote this before myself or bassist Steve Little had arrived! This track has also become the most requested and a favourite singalong at our live performances.

What ambitions do you have for the band/your career?
We want to release five albums in five years, for one. We also want to begin by playing US festivals in 2025 as we eyeball short support tours and Europe. We all have been in many bands over many years and realise this is different, this is special. Onward and upward!

Finally, as you leave the stage, what are your parting words?
First of all, thank you so much for your interest! To the readers/listeners, please give it a listen! We look forward to hearing from you, your critique, and your ideas! You can find links to any social media or streaming you use on our website, and we encourage you to join the mailing list and follow on all… algorithms and such. And stay heavy, people!
