A Q&A with MUVA

Cinematic Tribal Fusion from Mexico…
What’s the title of your latest release, and what does it mean to you?
‘SIN UN ADIOS’ – Mourning and catharsis.
What was the hardest part about putting this release together, and why?
Probably getting the overall sound and feel just right. Making sure all the different ideas I had actually worked together as a cohesive whole took a bit of time and tweaking.
Who produced the release – what did they bring to it?
Me, Chatrán González. I am the producer. The freedom to fully explore my own vision, without compromise.
What do you want the listener to take away from listening to your music?
A feeling. Something that resonates with them on an emotional level.
How does a track normally come together? Can you tell us something about the process?
Often begins with a melody or a poem or a beat that sparks something that comes to my mind, and the rest follows naturally.
What band/artists have influenced you the most since you started this project, and why?
All and none, really. It’s tricky for me to pinpoint one band or genre that influenced my writing. My music’s more a blend of experiences from where I grew up and how all that interacts with the sounds around me now.
What countries would you like to tour? Are there any standout venues you’d like to play in?
Countries? All the world, of course. The perfect stage isn’t a particular spot, it’s wherever my music lands with people who appreciate it.
If you could pick one track for our readers to listen to in order to get a taste of your music, what would you pick, and why?
Don’t have a favourite, but ‘YUM CHAAK’ is special to me, even if it stands out a bit. The lyrics Maya gave me then, with the rain around us, it just got locked into the recording. It’s a bit of an outlier sound-wise for MUVA, which is usually more powerful, but I love that track for giving a nod to our important pre-Columbian roots.
What ambitions do you have for the band/your career?
Ultimately, I want to connect with as many people as possible through the music, you know? To play proper gigs to proper crowds who are really feeling it.
Finally, as you leave the stage, what are your parting words?
You’ve been brilliant! Have a good one, and don’t forget to check out MUVA for a proposal without protocols.
