A Q&A with Dave Hause

Rock ‘n’ Roll from Santa Barbara, California…

What’s the title of your latest release, and what does it mean to you?
Drive It Like It’s Stolen. It means its time to release another record, that one came out in 2023!

What was the hardest part about putting this release together, and why?
Whenever you’re releasing records, the hardest part is the final decision to let go of the material and send it off to be pressed on vinyl, CD and released digitally. The lingering questions of “did we get as close to the intention as we could? Is everything spelled correctly? Did we remember to thank our roadies?” Can sometimes keep you up at night.

Who produced the release – what did they bring to it?
Our friend Will Hoge produced it, and it was engineered and mixed by David Axelrod. Will Hoge brings a terrific vibe of fun and adventure to every project, as well as a journeyman songwriter approach. Axelrod’s ears are so highly tuned, and his precision and passion make damn sure we sound our best.

What do you want the listener to take away from listening to your music?
The hope is almost always to know someone out there feels similarly to the way you do, and that we are a little less alone that we sometimes fear.

How does a track normally come together? Can you tell us something about the process?
The process varies, especially the initial spark of inspiration, but these days before we record material I make sure my brother Tim hears the song, and he often improves the work I’ve done, sometimes fully helping to rewrite, sometimes just by adding a flavor or two, but ultimately his fingerprints are crucial before we cut it to tape.

What band/artists have influenced you the most since you started this project, and why?
We recorded this record a few years ago, and since then we just spent 2 weeks in a studio in Vancouver recording the follow up album, so I couldn’t exactly say what the influences were for DILIS. Mostly the events that came after the pandemic, the maddening push to “get back to normal” after being frozen in time.

What countries would you like to tour? Are there any standout venues you’d like to play in?
I’m just grateful to have this work, especially when it brings us to other counties. It’s rare to be this far into a music career and still be able to make a living.

If you could pick one track for our readers to listen to in order to get a taste of your music, what would you pick, and why?
‘The Ditch’, from Kick. It sounds the most like what we sound like, lyrically and sonically.

What ambitions do you have for the band/your career?
Keep doing work that compels me and compels whomever I’m working with.

Finally, as you leave the stage, what are your parting words?
Thank you for the interview and the coverage, and see you at the show.
