Yorkshire Stands as a Top UK Destination for the Scene of Fishing Tourism (1)

Many anglers who look to travel across or even to the UK to cast a line in British waters will often have an eye on the south coast. The more agreeable climate at certain times of the year and its sprawling mostly sandy coastline certainly makes it inviting.

However, for the true anglers looking to be tested by an array of different fish, cast their rods in different environments, and are ready to make use of what we humans would call bad weather, Yorkshire is a top destination. Fishing tourism is on the rise, and Yorkshire has a lot to offer all who come with a tackle box ready.

Brits Helping to Propel Fishing Tourism

Across Europe, fishing tourism and the prevalence of recreational angling continue to grow. According to industry analysis on the potential of the overall market, Germany, Italy, and the UK are currently the fishing tourism leaders.

The continent as a whole is said to be home to 25 million recreational anglers, many of whom want to travel across their own countries and into different ones to test their skills and enjoy the great outdoors. Helping to spur this on is the sheer accessibility of the activity, with the UK alone being home to 54,000 disabled anglers.

On top of that figure, over 165,000 people with fishing licences in the UK are aged 65 or over. Figures suggest that there are over 2 million recreational anglers in total in the UK, with 800,000 going sea fishing annually. Such a high level of interest has spilt over from local angling to fishing tourism and even into local entertainment.

Looking to meet the demand of all of these anglers, entertainment creatives have leant into fishing. The move has proven to be a huge success, especially when you look at the collection of fishing online slot machines. The Big Bass series, in particular, is a dominant force, but so too is Fishin’ Frenzy.

Clearly seeing the entertainment value in fishing, it’s not just online slots that are bringing fishing to British screens. You can see this in action when looking at the TV slate, too. Mortimer & Whitehouse Gone Fishing is entering its eighth season on the BBC, and it’s all about touring the UK for a spot of tranquil fishing.

Ways to Enjoy Fishing Tourism in Yorkshire

Yorkshire is a vast county filled with the complete assortment of fishing environments and even easy access to the seas around the north east. So, it’s not a surprise that the aforementioned TV show, Gone Fishing, has frequented Yorkshire during its run. The River Ure in the Dales, River Esk, River Tees, North Sea, and Driffield Beck have all featured.

So, there are a great many different places to go for some fishing in Yorkshire. Perhaps the best way to go about it as an angler on tour is to find accommodation with nearby fishing spots. There are dedicated fishing lodges across Yorkshire, including Ashby Woulds and Ashley Pools, both of which offer cabins with hot tubs.

Another popular place to stay and fish is the very conveniently placed Yellowtop Country Park. Its lake is always well-stocked, has won awards for how it’s kept, and is known to have some hefty carp and ghosties in its waters. For some sea fishing, head more towards Whitby. There are plenty of charters and tours at the ready to take you to the coast’s best angling spots.

For anyone in or beyond the UK looking to explore a diverse and challenging setting for their fishing, see what Yorkshire has to offer!
