& Juliet – Review – Bradford Alhambra Theatre (3)

By Christine Goode, March 2025

The nights are getting lighter, spring is in the air, and what better way to start the week than with a trip to the theatre to see a feel-good musical? & Juliet has arrived in Bradford, and musical theatre fans of all ages are flocking to the theatre on this early spring evening. There is an air of excitement as we head into the theatre and take our seats. We have only been seated for a few moments when we notice the actors casually appearing on stage, talking to each other, and interacting with the audience. This is a trend in many shows these days, and it is great, keeping the audience intrigued as the auditorium fills, making everyone feel part of the experience.

The lights gently go down, and wow! Straight into the opening number ‘Larger than Life,’ and it certainly is! Full-on concert-like, the audience screams in delight, setting the precedent for the rest of the show.

& Juliet is a coming-of-age jukebox musical featuring the music of Swedish pop songwriter Max Martin. The musical premiered at the Manchester Opera House in September 2019 before transferring to the West End that November and has won countless awards. The story focuses on a “what if” scenario, where Juliet decides not to kill herself at the end of Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet. This intriguing premise sets the stage for a vibrant and uplifting journey of self-discovery and empowerment.

“Ingenious mix”

The cast are superb. Juliet, played by Gerardine Sacdalan, totally owns the show; her infectious stage presence is stunning, complemented by strong vocals, dance, and sass! She portrays a young, strong, independent woman and is inspiring. Shakespeare, played by Jay McGuiness, famed for being in the band The Wanted, is great and has us in stitches as he is constantly reprimanded by his wife Anne. He gives a boyband masterclass with the hit song ‘Everybody’.

Lara Denning plays Shakespeare’s wife Anne; her diction, vocal performance, and wit are fabulous. With a convincing and relatable performance, she had us all laughing. Sandra Marvin as Angelique, the nurse, brings a comedic touch with a brilliant northern accent that suddenly changes to powerhouse diva when she bursts into song and, for me, was a favourite. She is paired with Lance, played by Ranj Singh. Dr Singh is known for his expertise as a doctor and is often seen on TV, but now he has taken us all by surprise as a musical theatre star. He holds his own and gives an impressive performance in this, his debut show. Liam Morris played the role of Romeo tonight perfectly, portraying a hunky heartthrob in love with Juliet (and himself) and was hilarious.

The set design by Soutra Gilmour is stunning—an ingenious mix of Elizabethan and modern styles with vibrant colours and dynamic lighting transporting us into Juliet’s world. Choreography by Jennifer Webber is energetic and perfectly complements the pop anthems that drive the story forward. Each musical number is a spectacle, leaving the audience wanting more.

“Refreshing and inclusive”

Throughout the show, the themes of empowerment and self-discovery shine brightly. Juliet’s journey is one of finding her own voice and making her own choices, free from the constraints of her past. The creative idea of taking this age-old tale, turning it around, and bringing it right up to date with today’s life choices is both refreshing and inclusive, and features heavily in the show. Add hit songs such as ‘Love Me Like You Do’, ‘Domino’, ‘Oops!…I Did It Again’ and ‘Roar’, witty writing, and a high-energy cast, and it is a sure hit.

The finale of the show is a true celebration, with the entire cast coming together for a high-energy performance that has everyone in the audience on their feet, dancing and singing along, all whilst being showered in confetti. It is little wonder that this show is such a smash hit!

‘& Juliet’ is  at Bradford Alhambra Theatre until 29th March
