Falcon Looks Forward to Yorkshire Cycling Highlights
As the county prepares to welcome professional riders such as Geraint Thomas and Chris Froome to its roads, Jane Gara, manager of Settle’s country house hotel, Falcon Manor, has some tips for guests booking in to watch the action.

Falcon Manor is ideally placed as a base for the UCI World Championships (Worlds) between September 21 and 29 and the Tour de Yorkshire (TdY) which takes place between May 2 and 5*. While it is not on the actual route, both events pass within half an hour’s drive – or a good day out on the bike.
Said Jane: “Cyclists with a good level of fitness could combine catching the action with exploring our Yorkshire Dales lanes for themselves. Guests can ride from the door either on or (mainly) off-road to reach the route for Stage Four of the TdY or the World Men’s Elite road race.
“Other options for seeing the action might include a visit to Harrogate, which is the hub for the Worlds, or jump on the direct train to Leeds to catch the end of the TdY.
“It pays to know where you want to be on which day, to make sure you have enough time to get there, whether it’s on two or four wheels or public transport.”
Spectators should expect to be in place in plenty of time before the race is due through as rolling road blocks are employed by the race organisers.
Jane said: “Our advice is to take what you need with you. Yorkshire is blessed with a great range of pubs and cafes but you may not be near one, so a packed lunch might be a good idea – our walkers’ lunches are ideal.
“Be prepared for our Yorkshire weather – you may need sun cream or warm clothes and waterproofs – and it’s worth bearing in mind that you could be at the side of the road for quite a long time.”
While the Worlds are guaranteed to attract the very best riders, a strong field is also expected at the TdY as it gives the opportunity to compete on parts of the course which will be used in the World Men’s Elite race later in the year.
Jane said: “We are perfectly placed to access some of the best cycling in the country and are geared up for guests to bring their bikes with our own secure cycle storage, or we can arrange hire of road, mtb and e-bikes with a local shop.”
The Settle area has a wealth of routes right from the doorstep of Falcon Manor. Roadies can relish some iconic climbs while mountain bikers can choose from local bridleways to purpose-built singletrack at nearby Gisburn Forest.
Falcon Manor is part of James’ Places portfolio of hotels, inns, interior design and hospitality businesses across the Ribble Valley and Yorkshire Dales sharing the same service values and ethos.
