There’s great news for lovers of the arts and live events. The magnificent Square Chapel Arts Centre, Halifax has announced its re-opening.

The centre was saved in September 2020, after going into administration at the beginning of the first lockdown. Non-profit organisation Arts At The Mill CIC became the official owners of this much-loved venue.

Attached to the Piece Hall, Halifax; the Square Chapel is home to plays, gigs, talks, films and more. It’s a hub of great stuff, and had become a popular venue with local people, and those from further afield until it was forced to close its doors in March 2020.

“Hugely excited”

But the good news is it’s coming back. And Arts At The Mill have worked closely with Arts Council England and Calderdale Council to ensure a smooth transition.

Jonathan Davenport is Artistic Director. He said: “As an organisation we are deeply rooted in creating, producing and programming work with the community. Which is why the coming months are crucial. We are about to embark upon a significant programme of consultation to hear in-person what the community of Halifax wants and needs most from us. Along with our knowledge and experience from running our sites in Wigan, we feel we have a great chance of formulating an inclusive, relevant and ambitious plan for Square Chapel.”

Dave Jenkins is Managing Director. And he told us: “We are hugely excited to welcome the community and performers back in the buildings. But prior to that, we are working hard to ensure that we have everything in place to do so safely and fully equipped to deliver what Calderdale deserves.”

Square Chapel Arts Centre will officially open to the public for events in late summer/early autumn. In the meantime, audiences can sign up to the Square Chapel mailing list via the website www.squarechapel.co.uk
