Visit the Mesmerising Turks and Caicos Islands

The Turks and Caicos Islands are a group of around forty tropical islands off the coast of the Bahamas, on the Atlantic Ocean. They are a part of the British Overseas Territory. They are one of those islands untouched by the cruelties of humanity yet. The pristine sea beaches, the vibrant coral reefs and the unique Turks and Caicos beach houses make it a haven for all kinds of tourists. Couples on their honeymoon to deep sea divers are attracted to this archipelago of islands.

When to visit

Turks and Caicos are ideal for visiting in April and May. It is in late spring when travel discounts are available, as there are fewer tourists, which also allows you to have a unique and peaceful experience. However the weather here is pleasant all the year round, so you don’t need to worry about being too cold or hot there. These islands can be reached by air transport; the beautiful islands have a welcoming vibe the moment you get off the aeroplane. Book tickets beforehand only, board the plane and “Turk”-off to the amazing archipelago. Here’s a list of things which you can do to spend a perfect vacation in the Turks and Caicos Islands.

Things to do

1. Parrot Cay

Had an exhausting day of travel? And all you want is some peace? Head straight to Parrot Cay. There are a number of hotels and resorts there, most of them, right above the water. From the Parrot Cay resorts, you can spend a whole day indoors while enjoying the sea breeze and a clear view of the sea, rather ocean. You can go for a cool dip right from the cottage above the waters. It is an ideal spot for couples who are on a romantic honeymoon.

2. Cockburn Town

Visiting the islands, but not the capital? It’s not fair. Cockburn Town, other than its unique name stands out for its historical architecture. The buildings are built in old Bermudan styles and are present along the shore as well. There are prisons and jails present that date back to their colonised times, which surprisingly are still intact. There is a museum called the Turks and Caicos museum if you are interested in knowing more about the history of the islands. They also contain parts of a shipwreck from the 16th century.

3. Providenciales

This place is one of the most demanded tourist destinations in the whole world. It has been placed in the upper tiers for its tourist attractions by a majority of global websites. Providenciales or locally called Provo has an international airport thus making it accessible. It has a number of beaches. Grace Bay beach is one of them, though the sand on the beach is warm and soft, ideal for long walks along the shore. It is compensated by the rugged hills and tall ridges of cacti surrounding it. Provo is known for its underwater activities like diving and coral-reef viewing. You can always visit one of the three towns on the island and collect souvenirs for your friends.

4. Chalk Sound National Park

Turks and Caicos are full of uniquely named places. This national park is located close to Provo, thus can be easily accessible from there. It is known for the scenic beauty of its natural lagoon. Since it is protected as a national park, you can access this only by road, paddle boating and kayaking too. It will be an enjoyable experience. The shallow waters of the lagoon have a beautiful turquoise hue to it amidst small rocky islands. It’s like a treat to the eyes. There is abundant aquatic life to see from close quarters like stingrays and small lemon sharks. Visiting this place will be a memorable experience.

5. Smith’s Reef

Turks and Caicos is known for its coral reefs. Smith’s reef is one of the most visited snorkelling sites in the world. It is located close to Provo as well, north to it actually. There are various types of reef there, for the experienced as well as amateur snorkelers. Once you begin snorkelling, you will get to see the unique and diverse underwater fauna present in the vicinity of the reef. Stingrays, green turtles, eagle rays, barracudas, eels and lobsters are among the hundreds of creatures you will be able to see at such a close distance.

6. Water Sports activities

Around and in Providenciales are a number of agencies that provide water sports for the adventurous. These activities include motorboat racing, kayaking, snorkelling, scuba diving and canoeing. You can take a whole two days off for these. However do be careful around when performing these activities, not for the faint-hearted and you have to be as fit as a horse.

7. Museum hopping

Be it Anna’s art gallery in Provo, the Turks and Caicos museum in the capital town or Paradise Art Gallery in Provo again, you can never have a lack of actual art and history to admire if you are in Turks and Caicos. You can collect and buy unique jewellery and small souvenir paintings for your friends and family back home. Or even for your home decor.

8. Try the awesome food

Any form of Travel is incomplete without food and drinks. The best part of Turks and Caicos is that you can have any sort of food or dish you want – from Chinese to Continental, the island restaurants have it all. However being an attractive beach destination it has seafood platters to calm your soul. One of the most famous dishes is the conch fritters or conch salad. You can taste the sea in it. Lobsters, fishes are served either fried or baked or as you like it. Unique fruit platters and cornbreads are among the islands’ specialities that you can’t miss.
