Picture this: you wake up in a beautiful room with warm sunshine streaming in and the whole day stretching out ahead of you. Downstairs is a pretty little kitchen with croissants and coffee, and you have your own balcony to sit out on while you eat breakfast and decide what your plans are for the day.

Welcome to your cosy holiday cottage – the perfect place to base yourself for a staycation in Britain. But, where are you? Perhaps some of these locations will inspire where you book your next cottage holiday…

Nicknamed ‘the English Riviera’, many parts of South Devon are truly beautiful. Head to Torquay, Paignton or Brixham if you fancy wandering around quintessential fishing villages, or explore Babbacombe for a village that’s a little out of the ordinary. You’ll enjoy boat trips, award-winning fish and chips, beautiful bays and bucolic harbour towns, and there are plenty of beautiful holiday cottages to rent if you fancy staying in a traditional coastal retreat. Expect whitewashed buildings, nautical stripes and seagull accessories galore – you’ll never want to leave!

Next door to Devon is its ever-popular neighbour, Cornwall. Peppered with pretty fishing villages such as Polperro and Mousehole and covered in a patchwork of fields and forests, it’s a traditional and iconic holiday destination for good reason. Enjoy Cornish ice cream and pasties, sink your toes into the sand on Cornwall’s many beaches, or walk along the rugged cliffs on the north side of the county to look over the wild Atlantic Ocean. After a windswept day by the sea, you can retreat to your cosy cottage for a leisurely evening with a good book and glass of wine. Like Devon, there’s lots on for families – regattas, parades and festivals are on throughout summer for holidaymakers and locals to enjoy, and there’s always the Eden Project to visit too.

The Isle of Wight

Nicknamed ‘Dinosaur Isle’ for the huge number of fossils that continue to be unearthed on this lovely little island, the Isle of Wight is a bit of a well-kept secret. Often forgotten about by holiday makers in Britain, the Isle of Wight is under an hour’s ferry ride away from the mainland. It’s the perfect place to go if you fancy getting away from it all: from the classic holiday cottages perched atop cliffs or nestled into the countryside, to the lively atmosphere and huge crowds at the Isle of Wight Festival, it’s the perfect summer retreat for holidaymakers of all ages and interests. Have a peaceful holiday walking in the Isle of Wight’s beautiful landscape, or go crazy cramming in festivals, zoos and bustling seaside towns – whatever works for you.

Wales has so much going for it – from beaches and bays to castles and mountains, there’s plenty to do if you want an action-packed summer holiday. But, it’s ideal for a spot of relaxation, too. Head to Llandudno (a Victorian seaside resort that’s just as charming as it ever was) for traditional ice creams, Punch & Judy shows and donkey rides, or nip next door to Snowdonia if you fancy lacing up your walking boots for a day in the mountains. Nearby Conwy is a World Heritage Town (home to the smallest house in Great Britain – just 72 inches wide and 22 inches high), and you can easily spend an afternoon wandering Conwy’s formidable medieval castle and its walls.

Wherever you choose to go for a cosy cottage holiday, Britain has some wonderful summer retreats. Enjoy!
