Over the past few years, more and more people are looking beyond the beach for a holiday that offers a sense of real escape. The adventure holiday was recently named as one of the travel trends to watch in 2018 by the Evening Standard, and it seems that holidaymakers are now looking for much more of an experience than a typical stay on a resort can offer.

An adventure holiday is a great way to broaden your horizons, allowing you to challenge yourself with new activities and discover sights that are off the beaten path. If this sounds like the trip of a lifetime, I’ve put together a list of four amazing destinations where you can experience a holiday like no other. Read on to find out more…

Amazing Destinations for an Adventure Holiday iceland

Reykjavik, Iceland

While a capital city might not seem like an obvious adventure destination, Reykjavik can be your gateway to the majority of Iceland’s wonders. This is a place where nature reigns supreme: it’s possible to see powerful geysers, stunning waterfalls, fresh lava flows, and stoic glaciers all in just one trip to this wonderful country. There’s also a tonne of activities to get stuck into, including hiking, kayaking, climbing, and lake swimming, to name a few.

You can use the city as a starting point on a tour around Iceland’s famous Route 1 ring road, which encompasses nearly all of the major sights the land of fire and ice has to offer. Your first stop will probably be the Golden Circle, a selection of natural wonders located close to Reykjavik, then you can venture further to take in fjords, iceberg lagoons, whale watching, and some of the most desolate yet beautiful landscapes in Europe as you travel around the island.

Amazing Destinations for an Adventure Holiday himalayas

Himalayas, Nepal

A trip to the Himalayan country of Nepal is a once in a lifetime trip. It’s home to the highest peaks in the world, including Mount Everest, K2, and Kangchenjunga, all of which represent the ultimate challenge to the most daring adventurers. However, you don’t need to be a daredevil to get the most out of this region, and there are plenty of treks you can enjoy without any risky climbing.

Most trips to the country will see you arriving in Kathmandu, the capital. While it’s a colourful city, full of temples and tuk-tuks, the real call of adventure lies further afield. You can book organised walking tours of many stunning regions, including the Annapurna foothills, Gokyo valley, and even Everest base camp. These trails aren’t for the causal walker and can take up to two weeks to complete, but the sights see along the way are well worth the effort.

Amazing Destinations for an Adventure Holiday chamonix

Chamonix, France

Located near the French borders with Switzerland and Italy, Chamonix sits in the shadow of Mont Blanc, the highest peak of the Alps. With breathtaking views aplenty, a visit to this gorgeous region is a must for the avid adventurer who wants to get lost among its range of snowy peaks.

While winter sports are at the heart of the region, there is still plenty to explore for those who aren’t avid snowboarders or skiers. Alpine trekking is a very popular way of seeing more of the landscape and reaching wonders that are off the beaten path. You’ll pass through incredible vistas, open meadows, and dense forests along the many trails to choose from. And, when the day is done, there are plenty of hotels where you can rest up and experience the region’s famous hospitality.

Amazing Destinations for an Adventure Holiday hebrides

Outer Hebrides, Scotland

Somewhat closer to home, the Scottish Outer Hebrides offer a getaway that will take you right to the edge of the British wilderness. You’ll find all sorts of natural and man-made sights to visit: from stark sea vistas, white shell beaches, and lonely lighthouses to medieval towers, whisky distilleries, and cosy pubs. The Hebrides aren’t that far away, but you’ll feel like you’ve travelled to somewhere from a completely different time and place.

The best way to see the islands is to get on your bike and take on the recently established Herbidean Way Cycle Route, which will see you cross the ten islands in the archipelago. The six main islands are linked by causeways and there is minimal traffic on the road, so you’ll be able to get around easily. Plus, when you’re in the saddle, you have complete freedom to experience your own adventure.

So, when you’re planning your next escape from civilisation, be sure to keep these four amazing destinations in mind if you want to have a once in a lifetime adventure holiday.
