Wakefield Cathedral is to welcome guests from across the region with fire and light as a specially commissioned artistic installation transforms the outside of the Grade I listed building and its gardens into an illuminated cityscape.

Walk The Plank’s Fire Garden will cast a fiery glow around the cathedral. Families are invited to wander through a series of immersive installations, as they follow fire-lit pathways. Here they’ll see sculptural scenes of flames and foliage. And stumbling upon intricately carved flower boxes, and feeling the heat from fire-filled floral chimneys, with everything from mechanical plants that burst into flame before your eyes to holly bushes that ignite in a flash. The event promises to offer an unforgettable evening of entertainment.

“Very special evening”

Night of Fire and Light is presented by Wakefield BID, in association with Wakefield Cultural Consortium. It’s delivered by internationally-renowned outdoor arts experts, Walk the Plank. It’s a free to attend family-friendly event that will offer a taste of the many cultural delights on offer. And it’s on for two nights: Thursday 26 and Friday 27 March between 7pm and 9.30pm.

As Night of Fire and Light transforms the exterior of Wakefield Cathedral, visitors will be invited inside. They’ll get to experience its stunning architecture and heritage in a new way. There’ll be children’s activities, heritage tours and special candlelit worship on Thursday 26th March. And on the following night visitors will be able to enjoy the peace and stillness of the building by candlelight. On both evenings visitors will be able to walk the Cathedral’s labyrinth.

The events are part of the nationwide Cathedrals at Night campaign. These will see every Church of England cathedral open its doors for at least one very special evening during 2020; marking the Year of Cathedrals, Year of Pilgrimage in doing so.

“An exciting first for Wakefield”

The Dean of Wakefield, the Very Revd Simon Cowling said: “We are really pleased to be part of this spectacular Night of Fire and Light event which allows us to open our doors for visitors to experience this wonderful building in a new way. This is such an exciting first for Wakefield.”

Graham Whitehead of Wakefield Cultural Consortium told us: “As part of the national Cathedral at Nights programme we really do feel that this installation is like nothing that we have ever seen before.”

He added “Two of the most important parts of Wakefield’s story are its Cathedral and its international status as a city of Sculpture. The Night of Fire & Light brings these two things together in a spectacular and magnificent fashion.”

Billy Muirhead, Vice-Chair of Wakefield BID comments: “Wakefield is a thriving city centre. Filled with independent businesses and national high street names. Wakefield BID continues to look at innovative ways to encourage people to look again at a Yorkshire city that has changed beyond recognition in recent years, and Night of Fire and Light offers an opportunity to do just that. Cultural events such as this are important to the ongoing vibrancy of our city, and we are delighted to be working in partnership with local businesses and the Wakefield Cultural Consortium to deliver a spectacle that will surprise and delight audiences from across the city and beyond”.
