A remarkable Iron Age discovery – the Melsonby Hoard – has been secured for the Yorkshire Museum, keeping over 800 ancient artefacts in the region where they were found. Unearthed near Melsonby in 2021 by a metal detectorist and excavated by Durham University archaeologists, the hoard includes chariot wheels, ceremonial spears, cauldrons and more – offering new insight into Iron Age life in northern Britain. Thanks to funding from the National Heritage Memorial Fund, public donations, and expert support from institutions including the British Museum, the collection is now undergoing conservation and research. It will soon go on display to help tell Yorkshire’s evolving archaeological story.
