3 Types of Refrigerants that are Safer than Freon

Freon is a stable, nonflammable gas or liquid used as a refrigerant. It is used in the refrigerators and air conditioning units and works by producing a cooling effect when it evaporates. It has been in use for decades now, but environmentalists discovered that use of Freon is not very safe for the environment. It is a chlorofluorocarbon and has been shown to have an eroding effect on the ozone layer. Plans were therefore made to start phasing out the use of Freon as a refrigerant to protect the ozone layer.

By 2030, use of Freon as a refrigerant will be illegal. Due to this, manufacturers of cooling equipment have been adopting the use of other refrigerants that are safer than Freon. Here are some of the safe refrigerants being used now.

R-410A – This refrigerant is the most widely used today. It is also called Puron and is a blend of two hydrofluorocarbons. R-410A has been accepted so widely because it does not deplete the ozone at all. Further, the refrigerant is more efficient than Freon due to its high pressure and therefore better cooling capacity.

R-410A can absorb more heat than Freon which means the compressor doesn’t run the risk of overheating easily. Due to the high pressure, R-410A cannot be replaced in the systems that already use Freon because it requires a different pressure gauge. The new systems using R-410A come with a durable and high-quality compressor to withstand the high pressure.

“Best alternatives”

R-407C – This refrigerant is widely used, making it one of the best alternatives for freon. It also doesn’t deplete the ozone layer. It is suitable for those who want to retrofit the systems they already have. It has qualities similar to those of Freon and therefore can be used in the air conditioning systems that are already in place.

The retrofitting process for the use of R-407C is easy. First, the compressor is removed from the unit, and the Freon is harvested together with the mineral oil. The compressor is charged with a little polyolester oil and let to run dry. The oil is drained and the process repeated at least twice.

3 Types of Refrigerants that are Safer than Freon 2The filter is replaced with another one suitable for R-407C, the compressor is replaced, ester oil is charged in the system and then the system is evacuated. After that, the R 407C is filled into the system.

“Wide temperature range”

R-404A – this is another widely used refrigerant in place of Freon. It has qualities similar to Freon but has an ozone depletion potential of 0. It doesn’t have a rapid reaction to air and water, therefore, it is safe for many uses even in the commercial industry.

It is also suitable for use in the commercial industry because it has a wide temperature range from -45 degrees Celsius to 15 degrees Celsius.

There are many other alternatives to R22 that have been considered safe by the EPA which are already in the market and replacing the use of R22. Some of the others include; R 134A, and R 290. Most of these alternatives are readily available in the market.
