Preventing Plastic Pollution in Our Waterways

When you consider how much plastic you throw away every week, do you then wonder what happens to its waste?

BWML have created an infographic to explain the damage plastic waste is causing and how we can do more to help prevent the issue worsening. Take a look at the infographic to see how you can make a difference.

The local authorities here in the UK have offered recycling bins to take away any waste that can be re-used and recycled, however plastic waste is still appearing in our waterways. In fact, it is estimated that approximately 5,000 items of marine plastic waste can be found per mile of beach in the UK. This is a major concern for harming our marine life, and harming our planet.

Canals, rivers, streams, lakes and our oceans are all being polluted with plastic materials which actually make up 60-90% of all marine debris. To make matters worse, some of the plastic found in our waters can take over 600 years to break down. We need to act now if we want to make a change and there is plenty of easy ways we can prevent plastic pollution in our waterways.

Those that live on narrow boats or are avid boaters will not be able to avoid the pollution as they sail along past it so frequently. You may have seen all sorts of waste built up on the river banks or floating along with the current.
