Leeds-Based Ballet Company Scoops Major Award

Northern Ballet has won the dance award at the South Bank Sky Arts Awards for its production of 1984.

Presented at a ceremony in London, Northern Ballet was nominated alongside The Royal Ballet and Lost Dog.

Recognising British achievements in the arts since 1996, the South Bank Sky Arts Awards celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. The awards, which are unique in celebrating the arts in their entirety, include ten categories; dance, opera, comedy, TV drama, literature, classical music, pop, film, visual art and theatre.

northern ballet award souuth bankNorthern Ballet’s 1984 premièred in Leeds in September 2015 and has since toured the UK, closing in London at the end of May. The production, choreographed by Jonathan Watkins, has previously been nominated for a Manchester Theatre Award and was screened on BBC Four at the end of February 2016.

“Innovation”

Northern Ballet’s Artistic Director David Nixon OBE, said: “It is an incredible honour to have won the dance award at the South Bank Sky Arts Awards. We pride ourselves on bringing captivating and original performances to audiences throughout the UK  and this award is a significant recognition of the quality of our productions, our innovation in our chosen art form and the high standard achieved by all of our performing artists.”

Northern Ballet’s 1984 tour has now ended but the ballet which has previously been shown on BBC Four can be viewed in full online at BBC Arts.

Audiences can see Northern Ballet live in its new production of Jane Eyre in Wolverhampton, Stoke and Leicester this month. Next season Northern Ballet will perform Wuthering Heights at the West Yorkshire Playhouse in September, followed by a national tour of Jean Christophe Maillot’s Les Ballets de Monte Carlo’s production of Romeo and Juliet which includes performances in Sheffield and Bradford and David Nixon’s Beauty & the Beast which culminates in performances at Leeds Grand Theatre from December 2016.

Northern Ballet has also recently announced Casanova as its next major World Première. Casanova will première in Leeds in March 2017 before commencing a UK tour.
