Medinova Launches New Flu Vaccine Study
People in Shipley Offered Opportunity to Take Part in Study
Leading clinical research expert MeDiNova is launching a major recruitment campaign to provide people in Shipley, West Yorkshire with an opportunity to take part in a new plant based flu vaccine study.
In Australia alone, more than 170,000 cases of flu have been reported – more than twice the number of cases reported in 2016, with 72 flu-related deaths. It was the one of the worst flu epidemics the country had seen in ten years.
“One of the difficulties is that each outbreak may be caused by a different sub-type or strain of the virus so a different vaccine is needed this year.
MeDiNova, which operates out of Pegasus House, 90 Otley Road, Shipley, West Yorkshire BD18 3SA is looking for volunteers aged 18 to 64 who are interested in having the flu vaccine, to come forward and join the battle against flu which claims more than half a million lives each year and costs the economy millions of pounds through sickness from work.
“Text ‘Study’ to 85199 to find out more”
The word influenza comes from the Latin ‘influentia’, with some suggesting that this in turn was derived from the phrase ‘influence of the stars’.
An extremely contagious respiratory illness caused by influenza A or B viruses, it is unpredictable and can cause severe illness or death
As part of the study MeDiNova is using a single shot of the VLP vaccine, which is made with new technology using tobacco plants. Those who take part in the study have a 50 per cent chance of being injected with the placebo.
The purpose of the study is to determine whether one injection of the VLP vaccine gives protection from the flu virus.
Potential volunteers are asked to text ‘Study’ to 85199 to find out more. As well as receiving a flu vaccine for free, eligible participants will be reimbursed all reasonable time and travel expenses.
Kumar Muthalagappan, Chief Executive of MeDiNova, said: “Flu is a scourge which affects hundreds of thousands of British people each year and despite the introduction of the flu jab, it continues to be a major problem.
In addition to Shipley, MeDiNova also has centres in Romford, Essex, Northwood, London, Sidcup, Kent and Corby, Northants.
