The Life-Changing Nature of the Lottery

“If I won the Lottery tomorrow, I’d…” We’ve all uttered these words at some point in our lives and most of us are still crossing our fingers and toes and hoping that we one day know what it’s like to hear our lottery numbers read out on the TV whilst enjoying a proper cuppa Yorkshire Tea (let’s face it – it’s the only one worth drinking nowadays).

Of course, it’s true that most of us will never know what it’s like to hold one of those hilarious oversized cheques but winning the lottery is without a doubt one of the most life-changing events that any individual can experience, no matter whether you spend it on something extravagant and unnecessary or sensibly buy a house and the dream car you’ve wanted since you were a lad.

“Added security”

This was certainly the case for Hull couple Jill and Steve Walsh, who won a cool £1 million just over a year ago and decided that the purchase of a new four-bedroom house was at the top of the list of priorities. However, their purchases weren’t entirely sensible, with Steve confessing that he purchased a brand-new white Mercedes with the money, first owing to the fact that he’d wanted one since his Gran bought him one when he was a young nipper. “Everyone thinks it is all speed boats and yachts, but it hasn’t changed that much,” said Steve, who went on to explain that “it just makes it easier to spend money on normal things, like a car and the house.”

Whilst many will rhyme off a list as long as your arm when talking about how they’d splash the cash after a lottery win, the added security that extra dosh brings is without a doubt the most attractive prospect with most people.

“Perfect balance”

On the other hand, it probably does depend on how much the jackpot is that you scoop and whilst £1 million is a good amount of money to win, it pales in comparison when you realise you can win £250 million in Lottoland’s World Millions lottery, which is Europe’s record lottery jackpot and is almost £100 million more than the top prize on offer from the Euromillions draw. With that kind of money in your back pocket, you could probably buy Yorkshire Tea, never mind have to settle for drinking it whilst watching the latest episode of The Voice or whatever it is you’re into.

On the surface, it does seem that the majority of those who have won some of the more modest lottery jackpots over the years have struck a perfect balance between necessity and luxury. In any case, once you land the jackpot, the money is yours to spend and so you better get thinking just in case you do end up winning because you’ll have more friends than you can shake a stick at.

Nevertheless, the lottery remains one of the most life-changing institutions in existence and what’s more, a lot of the money raised goes to good causes so it’s a win-win situation for everyone. Remember though – you have to be in it to win it. What are you waiting for?
