‘Northern Light’, a brand new exhibition from Yorkshire artist Bob Barker is set to take over Leeds City Museum. Artist Bob Barker

Barker, who is renowned for his evocative representations of the northern mill towns and self styled ‘Northern Impressionism’, will bring 30 of his original oils, charcoals, sketches and limited editions to the Leeds landmark. The historic setting will complement Barker’s nostalgic work. It expertly captures the Yorkshire of his youth, seen again through his eyes as an adult. The exhibition launches to the public on Saturday 21 January.

Barker says: “The north is often unfairly overlooked. Artists focus on the magical light of St Ives and the romanticism of Paris instead. Through these works, I want to present the essence of northern life. But also to show that the light is both as enrapturing and beautiful as in any other place in the world.”

“Paying respect to the north”

The collection demonstrates several central themes, among them: play, family, work and sport. In capturing these moments in time, Barker has produced some of his finest work to date; a combination of an experienced artist painting from the heart and paying respect to the north that helped form him into the artist he is today.

Barker maintains that the north of England is unrivalled in the respect of natural light. He pays homage to his muse by naming the exhibition ‘Northern Light’.
