Sheffield’s Synthpop Pioneers Return With Hull Date, 24 August

by Victoria Holdsworth

The Human League return to the live stage next summer to play Zebedee’s Yard in Hull on Saturday 24th August.

Performing at the historic Old Town site, The Human League are the first act to be announced as part of the 2019 line-up, following last year’s performances from Orbital, Happy Mondays, The Wombats and Chase & Status.

The Human League are regarded as one of the most influential bands to come out of the 80s, with likes of Madonna, Moby, Pet Shop Boys to Robbie Williams citing them as an influence.

With four Top 10 albums and eight Top 10 singles in the UK (including the greatest ever Christmas Number 1 with ‘Don’t You Want Me’), as well as two US Number 1 singles the band have sold 20 million records worldwide.

“The last great pop group”

Famously described by David Bowie in 1979 as “the sound of the future”, The Human League have never rested on their laurels or relied on past glories to see them through. Ninth studio album, Credo, was a brilliant distillation of their ideas about pop and dancing, glamour and electronics.

Credo was produced by, I Monster, the Sheffield duo behind the 2001 single ‘Daydream In Blue’ and for many years the brains behind a slew of distinctive, playful electronica from the Steel City.

“We can’t understate what I Monster have done,” says Human League frontman Philip Oakey, “They grabbed the whole thing and simplified it.”

“We made the decision to not work with Sheffield musicians in case we fell out or something,” says the League’s Susan Ann Sully. “We just didn’t want anyone in Sheffield finding out how horrible we are!” Joking aside, the band are delighted with their all-Sheffield set-up and the band credit I Monster with bringing more of a sense of coherence to Credo.

Not just a pop group, then – but possibly the last great pop group. Here’s a gig not to be missed.

The Human League play Zebedee’s Yard, Hull on 24th August 2019. Tickets from £35.
