Anthrax Extend 40th Anniversary Celebration with Leeds Live Date
By Victoria Holdsworth
New York thrash metal heavyweights, Anthrax will be celebrating 40 years in the music industry with a Worldwide tour starting in the States with Black Label Society, before hopping the pond to Europe, for an extensive tour, which sees them coming to raise hell in Leeds on October 3rd 2022 at the O2 Academy.
Anthrax was formed in July 1981 in Queens, New York City, by guitarists Scott Ian and Dan Lilker, who discovered the band’s name while perusing a biology textbook, claiming it solely for its sufficiently evil-sounding connotation.
They are one of the bands responsible for the emergence of speed and thrash metal. According to Rolling Stone, Anthrax are one of the few heavy metal bands to receive critical praise and redefine the genre during the 1980s. The band has sold over 10 million albums worldwide, and are classified as one of the ‘big four’ of thrash metal bands alongside Metallica, Slayer and Megadeth.
The band will release a new live album, titled XL, in July this year via Nuclear Blast Records. The live performance was shot at the Los Angeles soundstage/studio, The Den, and captures the thrash metal giants livestreamed event as part of the band’s 40th anniversary.
“Forty years doesn’t feel like 40 years,”says drummer Charlie Benante.“Sometimes I have to remind myself about how long this strange trip has been. I enjoy playing these songs, they’re such a huge part of my life, and I know for a lot of our fans, they play a big part in theirs as well. It sure has been a long time since we rock’n’rolled in the UK and Europe, but we’re coming back soon to bring the noise to all of you guys. Being that we can’t get over there until summer later in 2022, we’re going to make sure that every show will be an eventful one. We won’t just be playing four decades of songs to celebrate our ongoing 40th anniversary – hey, we’ll be giving YOU some history! – but we just might have some brand new ones for you as well. Can’t wait to see all your happy, smiling faces!”
On this tour, fans can expect Anthrax – Joey Belladonna/vocals, Scott Ian/rhythm guitar, Frank Bello/bass, Charlie Benante/drums, and Jon Donais/guitar – to draw from all four decades of their extensive back catalogue, including fan favourites and deep cuts making their way into their nightly set list.
“There’s just something special about Europe,” said Belladonna. “Our fans there have always had a full-fledged excitement about our shows, and I enjoy performing more than anyone can imagine, so we’re really looking forward to this tour.”
If the announcement of the new live album, wasn’t enough to keep the fans going until the tour starts, the band have also released a new live music video for a song taken from the upcoming live record; Aftershock.
