In order to have a smooth house removal, planning your move is key and there are lots of things to consider. One thing you may not have thought about yet is the environmental impact of your move.

Did you know that the average house move generates about 17 kilos of CO2 emissions? Needless to say, a house move leaves a larger carbon footprint than you probably imagined.

So how do you carry out an eco-friendly move? Here are some tips to help you not only make your move more sustainable, but also reduce costs and for a more effective removal over all.

Reduce Your Move

By reducing the size of your move, you are decreasing the weight of your load. This could result in a smaller van and a lighter move needs less fuel. This way, you can reduce the emissions produces on moving day. A smaller volume also means a cheaper moving quote, so it’s a win-win.

Rather than throwing everything away, a more eco-friend option would be to sell your extra items at a garage sale. You can contribute to a more “circular economy” and reduce the amount of new items people buy. You can also participate by purchasing furniture from second-hand stores for your new home. This way, you reduce the amount of waste in society and can even save yourself some money.

Another option would be to donate your extra belongings to charities. Small items are easy to drop off at your local charity shop. If you want to increase your sustainability impact, you can also donate your things to environmental charities.

Packing Sustainably

The first step to eco-friendly packing is finding sustainable boxes. You can ask your friends if they have any boxes or ask your local supermarket to give you their leftover delivery boxes. It’s all about reducing, reusing and recycling!

Another option is to rent reusable packing crates. This reduces the amount of waste and the single-use of materials.

Optimising your space in your moving boxes can also contribute to your sustainable move. By using all the space efficiently, you could reduce the amount of packing materials you need, resulting in a more eco-friendly move.

You could also re-think your packing materials like bubble wrap. Consider using clothes or towels to adequately pad your boxes. If you still feel you need bubble wrap for your delicate items, use bio-degradable bubble wrap. This wrap is just as effective as the normal one and decomposes much quicker too – reducing your impact on landfills.

Choose a Sustainable Mover

When you are choosing a moving company, check if they have any environmental initiatives or foundations. Look for a mover who uses low-emission Enhanced Environmentally-friendly Vehicles or EEV Standard vans. Do some research and look for companies who hold the following ISO accreditations:

  • ISO 9001 Quality Management
  • ISO 14001Environmental Management
  • ISO 45001 Occupational Health & Safety
  • ISO 27001 Information Security Management

Most companies will offer an eco-friendly service and are investing in better practices. Websites like Sirelo can help you find and compare sustainable movers to help you carry out your removal efficiently. Good luck with your move!
