Leeds Residents Get on Average Just 4.53Hrs of Sleep Per Night
According to the NHS, adults are recommended to get between 7 and 9 hours sleep per night to help us to keep happy, healthy and motivated, however, a recent study has revealed that the majority of Brits are struggling to get in even 6 hours of uninterrupted sleep – and those from Leeds are getting even less!
The research comes from furniture and home furnishings retailer The Cotswold Company, found that as a nation, we frequently suffer from sleeplessness and interrupted sleep. Of course, day to day issues such as stress, money and health were listed as key reasons our sleep is suffering, alongside many of us finding the temperature of the room we sleep in being far too warm.
Perhaps not such a surprising sleep stealer for a large number of those surveyed was Brexit and the current state of uncertainty in the UK, which was revealed to be keeping an estimated 3.25million Brits up at night.
Whilst many of us turn to apps such as Netflix to help us unwind after a busy day, the Cotswold Co. found that technology can in fact be detrimental to our sleep and may actually be having the opposite of the desired effect for many of us in terms of switching off.
Overall, Glasgow laid claim to the title of the UK’s sleepiest city, with its residents getting just 3hours and 49 minutes of optimum sleep per night. Glaswegians it seems are not alone, with residents from Manchester (4 hours, 5 minutes), Birmingham (4 hours, 10 minutes) and Nottingham (4 hours, 15 minutes) not too far behind on the sleeplessness front.
Although both Sheffield and Leeds didn’t quite make the top 5 sleepiest cities list, they did land a place within the top 10, coming in at number 7 (Sheffield) and 8 (Leeds). Those hailing from Yorkshire’s Steel City were found to get on average just 4.5hrs of sound sleep per night, whilst not too far away in Leeds, residents revealed that their nightly average was around 4.53hrs of uninterrupted sleep per night.
In fact, even those living in the UK’s most well rested city, Bristol, are still only managing to fit in on average 5 hours, 13 minutes of undisturbed sleep per night.
The most restless cities – with the average amount of uninterrupted sleep each night – were found to be as follows;
1 – Glasgow – 3hrs 49mins
2 – Manchester – 4hrs 5mins
3 – Birmingham – 4hrs 10mins
4 – Nottingham – 4hrs 15 mins
5 – Southampton – 4hrs 20mins
The soundest sleepers, with the average amount of uninterrupted sleep each night, were found to be as follows;
1 – Bristol – 5hrs 13mins
2 – London – 4hrs 50mins
3 – Liverpool – 4hrs 45mins
4 – Newcastle – 4hrs 40 mins
5 – Edinburgh – 4hrs 38mins
