The Hunt for the Perfect Pair of Skinny Jeans
by Sophie Ralls
I remember my first pair of skinny trousers – a simple black cigarette leg from Topshop that I wore to school and was absolutely ripped to shreds about! Seven years on, the skinny is still at the top of the table for trousers and the gorgeous garment is something I just could not live without! As for the skinny jean: practical, timeless and oh so versatile.
From a t-shirt, hoody and Van casual combo to smarter styles with a silky camisole, cropped blazer and chunky heels, the skinny jean is an item my wardrobe MUST have! However, day-to-day wear and tear has left me slightly prohibited with the pair I choose to throw on. For me, my skinny jeans have to be skinny. Skin-tight skinny. But NOT a reeeaaaalllly-big-struggle-to-get-off type skinny. And so, as my trusty Topshop Jamie jeans are dying on me, a little too stretched and now slightly baggy, I am hitting the high street in search of a new pair of ever-practical, sexy skinny jeans. And here lies the problem. What I NEED are some denim, navy blue skinnies. What I WANT are some pastel, block colour or fabulously floral numbers! Dilemma.
“Ever so elegant”
One of two fun-floral-loving numbers I found, were River Island’s boisterous and brilliant super skinny tropical print jeans. Hawaii is stamped all over Stella McCartney this season, and influences can be seen in Givenchy as well. Screaming SS12, they are perfect for day wear with some neon yellow Nike high tops from Urban Outfitters (wish list) or my classic lace up white Vans. Also, Topshop’s edition of black denim overflowing with vividly vibrant flora caught my eye with their funky fluorescent feel. I can see myself standing out at night for all the right reasons, enjoying cocktails down Call Lane in these stunning slacks, teamed with some gold platform sandals for great glow-in-the-dark glamour (preferably Topshop Unique’s gladiator lace-ups!).
Powered out by print, I turn to block coloured denim, which is literally lining shelves everywhere! Whistles’ mustard yellow jean is high-waisted (which I want) and ever so elegant. Found on Asos.com, I can’t stress how wonderfully wow-some yellow is right now and these denim delights definitely deliver. For candy colours and adaptable chic, I head for Hudson’s lilac skinnies. I could keep the lavender hues feminine with gentle neutral accessories or toughen them up and team with bold turquoise trimmings – Chloe’s aquamarine SS12 handbags would tick the box.
“Tight but casual”
Alas, I have to admit defeat and find the navy number that I need! After trying on NUMEROUS pairs of jeans, I find J Brand’s 811 mid-rise skinny jeans in bluebell (OK, it’s a fancy way of saying standard denim blue, but it is a fabulously feminine and floral fancy way, so it works). Even though mid-rise, they sit just on my bellybutton, brilliant for both crop top and big t-shirt days. It has to be said, J Brand fits puurrrrfectly: super skinny at the ankle, terrifically tight and still super casual and comfortable. I can’t wait to wear my fresh fitting jeans with everything I possibly can!
