Best Holiday Wear 2017
Best Holiday Wear 2017
by Rebecca Hitchon
Summer’s here and that means one thing for us Brits: wearing the brightest, most exotic and Caribbean-suitable clothes (hello tie dye and Hawaiian shirts) in the hope that the weather might miraculously become more tropical. However much this is custom on the chilly little island that we call home, there’s definitely some more fashionable ways to embrace this time of the year without, may I add, looking like we witnessed an explosion in a paint factory…
The brand you need this season? Salt Resort Wear. “Brainchild of Founding Director Stephanie Alameida, who developed her own signature style by travelling the globe”: it fills the large gap in the market for luxury resort wear. With outfits like the LemLem Stripe Bandeau Playsuit, all the boxes are ticked because of the strapless design, elasticated waistband, frayed detail at the bust and, of course, stripes. You can definitely never go wrong with stripes, which is why the Tanya Taylor Striped Bardot Top and matching Buttoned Midi Skirt are so fashionable.
This pair are a bold statement but feature all of the things that we’re loving about summer fashion this year: navy and white nautical stripes, leaf embroidery, elasticated Bardot styling with shoulder straps (an edgy “off-the-shoulder top with a twist”) and midi skirts, not to mention cleverly switching up the latest big trend of buttoned shirts with a similar-style skirt. If you can’t find something to love about these pieces now, you really must be mad!
Playsuit £168 (RRP £240), Top £390 and Skirt £390, available from farfetch.com/uk
Lace is the perfect summer material – not just because of its ultimate boho festival vibes but because of its light, practical yet pretty nature. There’s no need to fear looking like you’re wearing a wedding dress, especially with the French Connection Hesse Broderie Lace Dress (below, left) which has all the best features of a summer dress: the white colour to keep you cool and to channel your inner Wimbledon competitor plus the fine, feminine details of the flutter sleeves and V-neckline. Want to find a practical but super pretty dress for day and even night time? You might just have to go for this- but make sure not to sit on any grass when wearing it!
£160, available from houseoffraser.co.uk
If I had to choose the biggest summer trend of 2017, I would probably choose cold shoulder pieces which anybody, yes anybody, can rock with confidence. If I had to choose the second, it would be embroidery which can jazz up even the dullest of denim. So mixing these two together can only make the best outfit, right? Correct. The Silvian Heach Fluted Hem Cold Shoulder Top (above, centre) is a perfect example of this and is definitely a lady’s summer must-have.
If you want to go for something a bit different (and cheaper), MandM Direct which has all the big brands we love for not much money in its sales of up to 75% off throughout the whole year, stock the Ribbon Women’s Off Shoulder Lace Trim Top (above, right) in a lovely coral colour. Featuring lace as well, this top also has all the stylistic features that we could possibly want.
Cold Shoulder Top £64.99, available from psyche.co.uk (also available as a dress).
Off Shoulder Top £9.99 (RRP £24.99), available from mandmdirect.com
Do you want glamour on a budget? Well, who doesn’t? I never thought a supermarket would hit the mark for this but fastest growing and award-winning supermarket Aldi have done it. Their set of summer clothing is giving us this season’s high-street fashion for less- whether you’re staying in the UK or going abroad.
My favourites have got to be the stripy Maxi Dress with its slimming design and Espadrille Wedges with the pretty navy criss-cross straps, which pair beautifully together and are just as stunning alone for whichever holiday activities you’re participating in. Merging sophistication and low prices has always been a hard thing to do but Aldi have definitely succeeded!
Dress £7.99, available in store
Wedges £9.99, available from Aldi and in store – also in pink
Aldi Holiday Fashion range starts from £2.99 and can be found in store and on aldi.co.uk (however, when it’s gone, it’s gone so make sure to top up your summer wardrobe while stocks last!).
Men: I haven’t forgotten about you although, let’s be honest, your range of clothing is slightly less excessive than us women. This summer, it’s all about the chino shorts. If you’re on a budget, Aldi is the place to go with their inexpensive but stylish shorts (below, centre left). While if quality is your main priority, retailer Joseph Turner “who produce traditional menswear using the finest classic fabrics, such as Scottish and Yorkshire woven tweed” have released some 100% washed cotton shorts (below, right), available in 5 colours for you to find your favourite look and ideal to relax in on your holiday.
Now, what to pair with them? Again, Aldi has got us sorted in terms of price with their Men’s T Shirt (below, left) only costing £3.99 and being available in three designs. But if you want something a little more designer, Weird Fish Clothing (stores in York and Castleford) stock shirts like the Ardmore Palm Shirt (below, centre left) with “an authentic, worn-in look”. Throw these on for going to the beach or the town and you’ll be ready to make an instant impression!
Aldi shirt £3.99, available in store and from aldi.co.uk
Weird Fish shirt £35, available from weirdfish.co.uk
Aldi shorts £6.99, available in store and from aldi.co.uk
Joseph Turner shorts £37.00 (RRP £57.00), available from josephturner.co.uk
With all these dresses, skirts and shorts that seem to dominate summer fashion, trousers get forgotten about. Although it’s assumed that we can’t wear trousers in the heat of summer, this year’s trends beg to differ. These trousers are just two of the best trouser pieces from MandM Direct. If you want to go bolder with your look, the Brave Soul Women’s Claudia Wide Leg Trousers are what you need with wide leg trousers being one of the most exciting styles out there and being iconic in the fashion world since as far back as the 1920s. If you want a more subtle look, make sure to choose Brave Soul Women’s Danes Cropped Trousers as their ultra-feminine coral colour and front tie are certain to turn heads.
Striped Trousers £9.99 (RRP £29.99) and Coral Trousers £9.99 (RRP £24.99), available from mandmdirect.com
If you’re looking for the best summer evening wear pieces, there are two places you have to go: Chi Chi and Little Black Dress. Both brands constantly send gorgeous, ‘almost too pretty to wear’ dresses out into the world and if now isn’t the time to wear them, then I don’t know what is.
Plus, with celebrity Alesha Dixon creating her own range of dresses for Little Black Dress, it looks as if we might just have to give in to buying one (that means at least five) new dresses as soon as possible. She has designed some stunning pieces using embroidery, bold colours and shapes to flatter any body type, while Chi Chi has completely cracked ‘garden party style’ with their elegant, floral printed numbers. I’m just going to cross my fingers for some more occasions to glam up while summer lasts.
Left £45 (RRP £75) and centre left £50 (RRP £90), both available from littleblackdress.co.uk
centre right £62 and right £27 (RRP £67.99), both available from chichiclothing.com
Imagine you’re on holiday. You’re wearing the perfect holiday outfit and you’re not afraid to admit that you’re looking absolutely fabulous. But the night is drawing in and it’s getting chilly. One small change to your outfit could ruin everything! Don’t worry. Help is at hand. Avoid a fashion tragedy with the range of soft and lightweight cardigans from N.Peal: the only luxury cashmere brand in the UK. Perfect to pair with your evening dress, the coral colours of the Milano Stitch Cashmere Coat and Handknit Slouchy Cardicape and soft grey of the Metal Edge Open Cashmere Cardigan compliment all outfits to give a fashionable but versatile style.
Coat £555, Cardigan £245 and Cardicape £485, (all below) available from npeal.com.
Bikinis are one of the most essential items for your holiday suitcase (unless you holiday in Britain like me) so this Grenada Marine Blue Stripe Bikini Set from Dorina is perfect to pop on and look effortlessly cool throughout the day while on the beach. The brand has newly released a range of bold patterns and bright summer colours that will make everyone notice you, along with the beautiful vintage-style halter necks and chic nautical vibes of their bikinis.
It’s easy to feel exposed when wearing a bikini which is why you need the Dorina Fiji Beach Crochet Dress. Put it over the top of your bikini and not only will you feel less conscious and a bit warmer but you’ll be the spitting image of a model in a bikini catalogue. These pieces are too good to miss- I might just have to buy them and hope for hotter weather while on some Norfolk beaches this summer!
Bikini top £14, Bikini bottom (above, right) £14, Dress (above, left) £22, available in bright rose and blue lagoon, all from asos.com.
I’m not embarrassed to admit that I recently bought an almost identical pair of these Birkenstock Milano Sandals (below, left). Just look how gorgeous they are! With materials chosen to be extremely durable, allow a firm grip along with the adjustable straps but most importantly keep feet comfy, these sandals are practical for long walks around your holiday destination. Don’t forget to pack the season’s go-to shoes in your suitcase so that you can pair them with any summer outfit, as well look super stylish.
£59.99, available from psyche.co.uk
What is the main shoe style that we all associate with summer? Flip flops, of course. Nothing quite sounds like summer like the slap of their soles on some hard sand on the beach. Yet no one ever wants to spend a fortune on looking as fashionable as possible in probably one of the most-used summer shoes ever. Well, that’s okay because MandM Direct’s flip flops (above, right) combine fashion and low prices to make something I like to call ‘a no-brainer buy’. This pair features one of the newest trends to summer 2017: gingham and are from designer name ‘Only and Board Angels’ for the price of a quality packet of biscuits!!
£1.99 (RRP £4.99), available from mandmdirect.com
Straw hats and summer go together like fish and chips, meaning they’re not only the ideal accessory for stopping us from turning a lovely shade of ‘sunburn red’ but also for looking as awesome as possible. My top picks? Women, you will love the Weird Fish Diwali Straw Hat (below, left) with a fabric ribbon for the ultimate boho, festival style while men, the classic fedora-style Panama Hat (below, right) with a black ribbon (“hand-woven in Ecuador”) is ideal to create a suave look.
Women’s £12 (RRP £15), available from weirdfish.co.uk
Men’s £55 (RRP £85), available from josephturner.co.uk
When did watches become so fashionable? Suddenly, they’re having a second heyday and it couldn’t be more exciting. With the expanded Fire Island collection from Versus Versace, summer just got a lot better and a lot more fashionable. Already a hugely popular collection: Fire Island had a lot to live up to by adding six bold, jelly watches but their bright, summer colours make any outfit perfect for the hot weather and the dials with stainless steel detailing in either gold or silver add an element of elegance and maturity. Everyone will know you’re wearing one of these magnificent watches by the two raised lion heads on the strap so make sure to flaunt it!
The collection starts at £90, available from watchshop.com
Stylish sunglasses are a must when you want the best holiday wear – not only do they offer protection but they are the icing on a perfect outfit.
Though we might think scarfs are for winter, beautiful pieces like the SEP Jordan Multicolour Kuffieh (below) are perfect for cold summer evenings. With its intricate design and huge range of colours, not only will this keep you warm but it will also complete your outfit with an edge of sophistication. Each scarf from SEP has a unique story behind it as it is hand-embroidered using a centuries old, complex and time-consuming technique “according to the taste and mood of the artist”. The high-quality Palestinian craftsmanship provides you with a handmade, loved and quality accessory that won’t be found anywhere else and cannot even be created with a machine.
£48, available from sepjordan.com
It’s not just about the clothes when it comes to fashion: what you put them in is equally as important. Say hello to the glorious range of luxury leather travel luggage by Maxwell Scott. The brand embodies quality at its finest with their vegetable tanned bags, accessories and luggage. They are all handcrafted in Tuscany, fusing “timeless British design with traditional Italian leather artisanship”. Before you go away this summer, consider the FleroEL Extra Large Leather Travel Bag or Piazzale Wheeled Leather Trolley Case. Both come with a stunning choice of chestnut tan, dark chocolate brown or night black colours to make you the most suave and elegant person at your hotel.
Bag £609 and Trolley Case £645 (above), available from maxwellscottbags.com
