Who’s Wearing the Trousers?

by Jemima Wilson

Statement trousers have never been so dominating. With bright colours and daring prints characterising Spring/Summer, luxurious textures and decadent embellishments look set to define the opulent Autumn/Winter season. Current trouser trends are encouraging us to experiment, so I hope you’re feeling adventurous!

MSGM Cropped Crepe Trousers, £180, matches.com

For work or weekend, cropped cigarette-style pants in rich, autumnal shades are effortlessly chic. Worn with a white shirt and heels for smart sophistication or teamed with a luxe T-shirt and blazer for casual cool, these red cropped candy pants by MUI MUI would look great in the office or about town. I love the sumptuous colour palette for A/W, featuring reds, purples and gold, but if you’re still holding out for summer, then bold bright colours such as electric blue are a vibrant alternative. These cropped crepe trousers by MGSM look amazing with a floral top. Don’t limit such versatile trousers to daylight hours; adding elegant heels and a glamorous clutch bag will take you smoothly from a daytime meeting to evening social.

“Clashing”

Stella McCartney Brocade Silk-Blend Trousers, £565, Harvey Nichols

Sparkle Embellished Leggings, £175, Reiss

Print trousers are another stylish way to go from day to night, and in keeping with the opulent mood for autumn/winter, brocade is a great pattern to try. Stella McCartney’s metallic brocade silk blend trousers available at Harveynichols.com would look striking with black and white monochrome as a sophisticated ensemble for work or any formal occasion. However, if you like a bit of colour to liven up your day, these playful print trousers by H&M could be worn with a bright T-shirt or a colourful sweater. Clashing colours are encouraged, the more outrageous the better!

So trousers may not seem the most obvious or feminine choice for a glamorous night out, but Reiss’s eye-catching sequin leggings are sparkling enough to turn heads at any party. A demure yet intriguing alternative to shorts, dresses or skirts, these sheer, embellished trousers are guaranteed to get you noticed amongst the most eclectic of crowds. When wearing these I’d keep everything else simple; understated accessories let the trousers do the talking!

“Fool proof”

Rich and Skinny Legacy Legging in Geyster Foil, £140, therawdenimbar.co.uk

Yet if jeans are more your thing, a second-skin for day or night, shiny, embellished or bright skinnies are a perfect way to introduce some glamour to your wardrobe. I’m sure everyone agrees though, that getting the size, cut and fabric just right is no mean feat. Searching for the Holy Grail comes to mind!

That’s why the concept of The Raw Denim Bar’s Denim Concierge is genius. You simply fill out a questionnaire and experts at TRDB then select and deliver 5 pairs of jeans directly to your door. You try them on at home, keep the dos and return the don’ts. Fool proof! These metallic copper jeans by Rich and Skinny are a stunning evening staple for autumn. Toughen them up with killer heels, red lips and black leather for a powerful party look.

Now is the time to let your legs take centre stage, but it’s more about concealing than revealing, and versatility is key. With so many styles, fabrics and colours to choose from, wearing the trousers has never been so appealing.
