Best Summer Lipsticks 2018

Lipstick has definitely been enjoying something of a renaissance in the last couple of years. In the past, your only decisions were “what colour?” and “lipstick or gloss?”, but these days the lipstick market is something more of a minefield.

There are more colour options than ever before, and the selection of textures and finishes available (both high street and designer) means picking a lipstick is no longer a straightforward decision. As we head into the summer season, it’s time to leave behind the winter makeup and inject some fresh colour, texture and life back on to our faces.

The most important part of any lip look is beautifully conditioned lips. There’s no point spending time and money on a beautiful lipstick only for cracked, chapped and dry lips to make it look like a disaster within seconds. The change in weather and temperature can cause havoc with our skin so keep your lips moisturised and in tip-top condition with Prevasore everyday lip therapy.

“Being bold is what it’s all about”

This is a product that can be used on a daily basis to keep the lip area soft and smooth, and also as a topical treatment for chapped lips and cold sores. It works by creating a moisturising and lubricating layer that protects the delicate skin on and around the lips and encourages healing.

Once your lips are moisturised and summer-ready, the fun really starts. Summer 2018 is due to see a fabulous mix of trends for makeup. Pastel, candy shades will sit alongside the ever-popular brights – pinks, corals and orange-based reds. Being bold is what it’s all about, and one of the most accessible ways to follow a trend is by using makeup. It’s an affordable, temporary way to try out a new idea, or two!

Here are my picks for the best summer lipsticks in 2018…

Best Summer Lipsticks 2018 essence

“Comfortable on the lips”

Essence makeup is stocked exclusively in the UK by Wilko stores. Don’t let the “budget beauty” vibe put you off – this is a fantastic brand with superb quality products for prices that have to be seen to be believed. This summer they are leading the way with their variety of lip products on offer. My favourites are the Butter Sticks (£2.50). These come in two varieties – Matt Love and Glossy Love.

Matt lipsticks are still as popular as ever (thanks in part to the likes of Kim Kardashian and Kylie Jenner) and Essence’s Matt Love in Pink Marshmallow is one of the nicest I’ve tried. With soft cocoa butter, it’s not a drying formula, it’s still comfortable on the lips and the colour is perfect for 2018 – a bright, bold candy pink. In the Glossy Love range, Sweet Frosting is the perfect nude, it would perfect paired with a more dramatic eye look.

For the price, why not get both? You could even get your beauty products at a discounted rate by using a verified discount code from Dealslands.

Best Summer Lipsticks 2018 MATTE ME

“Long-wearing formula”

Although summer is the perfect time for trying a new trend, you need to make sure it’s a long-wearing formula. Hot temperatures, sunshine, food and drink all combine to mean lipstick can be there one minute, gone the next. However, don’t fear. Sleek makeup have come up with the answer in the form of their Matt Me lip creme range (£4.99). These have a super long-wear formula with some of the highest pigment colours I have ever seen. There are five new shades for summer, my favourites being Hellacious (burnt orange) and That’s So Fetch (blue-toned magenta). You can guarantee these won’t budge for hours no matter how many cocktails are consumed, so perfect for summer holidays, festivals and days out.

For those who prefer something a little more conservative, yet still full of summer glamour, look no further than Memi makeup. A quick word must be given to this brand’s fantastic packaging. The sleek, silver bullet features a pop-up mechanism that makes it appear far more high end than the £12 price tag. This is one lipstick that you won’t be ashamed of flaunting this summer. Their lipsticks come in two finishes – matte luxe and satin luxe. My favourites are the satin luxe in Date Night – the perfect pink, subtle enough for all skin tones but dramatic enough to lift an outfit and take you from the office to balmy summer cocktail-filled evenings. The matte luxe Tease Me is another winner. A soft, true matte that has just enough moisture to make it comfortable on the lips, this nude shade will look amazing with a tan and can be amped up with a smokey eye and some fabulous cheekbone highlight.

best summer lipsticks 2018 joan collins

“Stunning mix”

As an icon of style, it would be rude to review lipsticks without mentioning the uber-glamorous Joan Collins, who has designed her own makeup range – Joan Collins Timeless Beauty. Dame Joan’s lipsticks have been created to not only deliver fantastic colour and coverage, but also care for the skin. Her Divine Lips contain hyaluronic acid, actively moisturise, and help to fill in fine lines. There are 18 colours to choose from, ranging from the dark and moody Alexis though to the candy floss pink Bella. My summer pick for this year is Suzy Star, a unique yet stunning mix of pink, coral and red. It’s a statement look but the beautifully light, silky texture makes it easy to wear and incredibly comfortable. The gold packaging is reminiscent of Charlotte Tilbury’s cult lipsticks, but at £18, Dame Joan’s offering is much easier on the purse strings.

At the same £18 price point, natural skincare and makeup brand Odylique bring us their organic mineral lipsticks. Marketed as 100% natural and 86% organic, these animal-friendly lipsticks have a beautifully rich and pigmented formula. Apricot sorbet is a fantastic shade for the summer months. A very wearable apricot-orange shade, it has a shimmer that provides a copper/rose gold hint of metallic. This will be a sure-fire winner for younger makeup wearers. Again, it’s festival friendly, will look fantastic against bronzed skin and could even be doubled up as an eye shadow or highlighter.

best summer lipsticks 2018 mary kay

“Worth every penny”

Mary Kay cosmetics may not be available in every department store in the UK, but this is a brand that has been around for a long time, and knows a good lipstick from a bad one. Launched in America in 1963 by founder Mary Kay Ash, this company works in a similar way to Avon in that you buy your products through independent beauty consultants. This way of working helps to continue the mission of the company “Helping women achieve personal growth and financial success”. Their Gel Semi-Shine lipsticks are priced at £14 and come in a beautiful range of colours. These are not matte by any means, they have a slight sheen to them but have excellent colour pay-off and a fantastically long-wearing formula. Summer favourites are Love Me Pink and Rosewood.

Last, but my no means least, is my personal favourite of all the lipsticks mentioned above. Yes, it’s also the highest price point but sometimes you get what you pay for, and in this case it’s worth every penny. Perricone MD Cosmeceuticals are primarily a premium skincare brand. Led by Dr Perricone, they have branched out into makeup – more specifically “No Makeup Skincare”. As well as No Lipstick Lipstick, they also have foundation, concealer, primer and foundation serum. These makeup infused skincare products are designed to primarily care for your skin while introducing universally flattering shades of colour that adapt to each individual’s skin tone.

The lipstick comes in one colour only, and at first glance looks like it may be quite dry in texture. However, once it’s applied to the lips you realise just how moisturising and rich the consistency is. The colour really does adapt to everyone differently, and delivers such a flattering pinky-nude shade that can be left sheer with just one coat, or amped up with a couple of layers. This is one of the nicest, most comfortable and flattering lipsticks I have ever worn. Yes, the price tag of £25 is definitely steep, but when coupled with luxurious packaging, this is a summer favourite that will take you through to autumn and beyond.
