Introducing: Where Fires Are
Adrenalin-fuelled, thoughtful alt-rock from the mean streets of Leeds…
YOUR NAME: Robbie Gillespie.
BAND NAME: Where Fires Are.
WHAT DO YOU DO/PLAY? Vocalist.
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN TOGETHER AS A BAND/PLAYING MUSIC? Ten months.
GIVE US THREE REASONS WHY PEOPLE SHOULD TRACK DOWN, LISTEN AND DISCOVER YOUR MUSIC?
While we draw inspiration from bands we look up to (like all musicians everywhere) we aren’t a carbon-copy of another band. We feel we have something a little different, and we’re only just getting started.
WHERE DO YOU SOUND BEST – FESTIVAL, CLUB, BEDROOM – OR SOMEWHERE ELSE?
We are yet to play our first festival but we are very excited about the prospect. We are loud, and love making full use of the stage! So out of those three options, I’m gonna say festival.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST …
RECORD? I think it was the ‘Wonderwall’ single by Oasis. On tape.
CD? Blood Sugar Sex Magik by the Red Hot Chili Peppers or possibly Bleach by Nirvana. Actually, it might’ve been a Weezer record.
DOWNLOAD? Ha ha – it was either ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’ or Last Resort by Papa Roach. I was angsty when downloading came about…
SO, WHEN IT ALL GOES RIGHT AND YOU’VE GOT A MANSION AND A SUPERMODEL GIRL/BOYFRIEND, WHAT WILL BE YOUR BIGGEST MUSICAL INDULGENCE?
Ooft… maybe our own studio? Does a swimming pool in the shape of a microphone count as a musical indulgence…?
SO, WHEN IT ALL GOES WRONG AND YOU’VE ACRIMONIOUSLY BROKEN UP CITING HUGE MUSICAL DIFFERENCES, WHAT DO YOU FALL BACK ON?
Benefits. No I’m kidding. Eh… we dust ourselves off and have a go at solo careers, each of us secretly hoping for the other four to fail miserably, allowing the successful one to play Good Samaritan and invite the rest along to a comeback gig when we’re all 72-years-old, finally mending our broken friendships before the first one of us dies… Sorry… that got a bit darker than anticipated.
PLEASE CITE SOME INTER-BAND MUSICAL DIFFERENCES …
Our bassist enjoys death metal. The rest of us don’t. Like… really, really don’t. But we like him a lot so it’s all good.
WHO ARE YORKSHIRE’S FINEST IN CULTURE, SPORT AND MUSIC?
In culture… the people responsible for Yorkshire Tea. Unbeatable. Culturally magnificent. In sport… my heart says Leeds United but my head is laughing at me. Let’s go for all those Yorkshire folk who won medals at London 2012. There was tons. In music… hmm… I’ll stay quite current with this one and say Pulled Apart By Horses. Great band.
NAME YOUR SUPERGROUP – WHO’S PLAYING WHAT AND WHO’S ON VOCALS?
Ok, I can’t speak on behalf of the whole band for this one but here goes: Drums, Dave Grohl, bass, Victor Wooten, rhythm guitar, Jim Martin circa 1989/1990 (Faith No More), lead guitar, John Frusciante (he’s also on backing vocals). That just leaves the singer… this is insanely tough but I’m going to go for Brandon Boyd. It was between him and Kurt Cobain but I think Frusciante’s backing would better compliment Boyd.
GO SEE THIS FILM: Mighty Ducks (the first one).
GO READ THIS BOOK: Scar Tissue (Anthony Kiedis autobiography).
GREAT LOST BAND/ARTIST: Soul Vitamins.
WOULDN’T BE CAUGHT DEAD SUPPORTING: There are a lot of names going through my head right now. But one…? Bieber.
LONDON, L.A OR LEEDS? Haha! We love Leeds but it’s gotta be LA, hasn’t it?
AND FINALLY … AS YOU LEAVE THE STAGE, WHAT ARE YOUR PARTING WORDS.
Currently? “Thank you very much, have a great night.” In the future (hopefully)? “Thank you. Please don’t hesitate to approach us in a mad frenzy. We would very much like to feel important.”
