Dark pop take on iconic Sheffield synth sounds…

YOUR NAME: Ben Rooker
BAND NAME: Vuromantics
WHAT DO YOU DO/PLAY? Play Synths/Synths
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN TOGETHER AS A BAND/PLAYING MUSIC? Physically playing together in a room, two months.

Well once you hear it the ‘why’ will be self-explanatory. You should be asking ‘how’? But here’s three:
1. Our visual side to our music is very interesting, not just run of the mill ‘my first music video on imovie stuff’.
2. The songs are all different, seriously, something there for everyone who has an interest in audible sweeties. Even though that’s probably 5% of the world, that’s quite a lot of listeners.
3. We believe our music makes a connection in a way that says ‘everything is ok, we’re a bit weird and don’t have a life plan either, let’s party and not worry, it’s ok to be different’.

WHERE DO YOU SOUND BEST – FESTIVAL, CLUB, BEDROOM – OR SOMEWHERE ELSE?
Have you ever had a festival in your bedroom? Long Answer: Well this is the beauty, the way we go about mixing it could quite easily be headphone music for the bedroom. But we also value the art of groove which means that it works in a club capacity. Our choruses are quite easy to sing along too as well and have some nice hooks with an element of hope and good feeling running through them, so it could quite easily capture a festival goer’s attention I believe. Short Answer: I don’t really know.

“An element of hope”

WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST…
RECORD? My first record that I bought was Franz Ferdinand’s ‘Tonight’ when they toured in 08 and came to Sheffield.
CD? It was a single, The Artful Dodger – Re-Wind (Crowd say bo selecta).
DOWNLOAD? God, errrrrrmmm. Well I got an iPod quite late so it would be around 2006/07. Could have been Kanye West – ‘Stronger’, something current at the time. Or I might have gone back in time and looked for some 90’s rock and grabbed Blur’s ‘Country House’.

SO, WHEN IT ALL GOES RIGHT AND YOU’VE GOT A MANSION AND A SUPERMODEL GIRL/BOYFRIEND, WHAT WILL BE YOUR BIGGEST MUSICAL INDULGENCE?
Well my flat is already pretty big and my girlfriend is pretty fit too, so right now I just enjoy listening to Gary Numan’s Telekon on my Project record player. Nice way to see the day out. I’ll probably keep it that way, even if I develop a coke habit through the success.

SO, WHEN IT ALL GOES WRONG AND YOU’VE ACRIMONIOUSLY BROKEN UP CITING IRRECONCILABLE MUSICAL DIFFERENCES, WHAT DO YOU FALL BACK ON?
Just make club appearances at student nights and do a ‘DJ set’.

PLEASE CITE SOME INTER-BAND MUSICAL DIFFERENCES…
As in what people like and what I don’t like? Callum and Sergiohsocool have a metal side to them which I’m not too keen on. I do understand it; however, I just don’t indulge.

“Jarvis Cocker is the greatest lyricist Yorkshire has ever produced”

WHO ARE YORKSHIRE’S FINEST IN CULTURE, SPORT AND MUSIC?
An excellent question. Culture: Depends which side of culture. Food, James Martin perhaps? There’s some good artists in Sheffield at the minute, Mick Rick, Matt Cockayne. Check them out. Sport: Jamie Vardy has done well recently. He has a nice story. Music: I think Jarvis Cocker is the greatest lyricist Yorkshire has ever produced, better than Hawley, Turner and that try hard from the Kaiser Chiefs.

NAME YOUR SUPERGROUP – WHO’S PLAYING WHAT AND WHO’S ON VOCALS?
McClure – After The Simpsons‘ self-appointed coolest character. Vocals = Michael Hutchence. Guitar = Prince. Bass = Bernard Edwards. Keys = Nick Rhodes. Drums = Derek McKenzie. I think they would all work well together musically. Prince might delegate a bit too much though and frustrate Nick. I have noted three are dead.

GO SEE THIS FILM: La La Land
GO READ THIS BOOK: Total Competition – Ross Brawn (you can apply that book to a wide variety of things in life).
GREAT LOST BAND/ARTIST: Ilya Santana (I found him on Soundcloud, no idea who he is, love him).
WOULDN’T BE CAUGHT DEAD SUPPORTING: A covers band, ewwwww.
LONDON, L.A OR LEEDS? L.A. I lived in Leeds for three years. London is good for a weekend, maximum.

AND FINALLY… AS YOU LEAVE THE STAGE, WHAT ARE YOUR PARTING WORDS.
T-shirts are available at the back of… Nah jokes, hands up if you thought I was the best member? (clapping above the waist counts as raised hands).

Vuromantics first single ‘Vultures’ is out now.
