Introducing: Jen Armstrong
POP! Self-penned songs, great CV, Yorkshire-born… with a pink edge!
YOUR NAME: Jen Armstrong.
WHAT DO YOU DO/PLAY? Piano, I sing, and I occasionally play violin!
HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN PLAYING MUSIC?
I wrote my first song when I was 12, and I started playing the violin when I was 7.
WHERE DO YOU SOUND BEST – FESTIVAL, CLUB, BEDROOM – OR SOMEWHERE ELSE?
Everyone sounds great in the shower right? Haha. I sound great both in a recording or live situation – my YouTube videos showcase both so perhaps on there!
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST…
RECORD? Hanson – Middle of Nowhere.
CD? Savage Garden.
DOWNLOAD? Something equally as the above two, I’m sure.
SO, WHEN IT ALL GOES RIGHT AND YOU’VE GOT A MANSION AND A MODEL PARTNER, WHAT WILL BE YOUR BIGGEST MUSICAL INDULGENCE?
A personalised Steinway grand piano. Probably in pink.
SO, WHEN IT ALL GOES WRONG AND YOU’VE ACRIMONIOUSLY BROKEN UP CITING HUGE MUSICAL DIFFERENCES, WHAT DO YOU FALL BACK ON?
Songwriting and co-writes – that’s actually really where the money is you know…
CITE SOME INTER-BAND MUSICAL DIFFERENCES…
As I’m a solo artist, I guess this could be perceived to mean what do I not like about myself. I generally like myself. But I can be stubborn as hell. Which isn’t always a good thing.
WHO ARE YORKSHIRE’S FINEST IN CULTURE, SPORT AND MUSIC?
I have been lucky enough to write and gig with a few musicians who are crazy talented world class. Emily Lynn and Hannah Rei are two such people.
NAME YOUR SUPERGROUP – WHO’S PLAYING WHAT AND WHO’S ON VOCALS?
Me and Gavin Degraw on vocals. Ben Folds on vocals and piano. And then my drummer Ste and my guitarist Phil, they’re the finest I know.
GO SEE THIS FILM: Cloverfield.
GO READ THIS BOOK: I Heart New York (…yeah I’m a girl)
GREAT LOST BAND/ARTIST: The Beatles and Freddy Mercury
WOULDN’T BE CAUGHT DEAD SUPPORTING: I’d be happy and lucky to support anyone successful.
LONDON, L.A OR LEEDS? As I frequent all three. I cannot say. I’m in LA right now, head to Leeds in a few days, and go to London in December.
AND FINALLY … AS YOU LEAVE THE STAGE, WHAT ARE YOUR PARTING WORDS.
You’re all beautiful. Can’t beat a good old cliché.
